Journey handles upgrades for students who purchase through them. They have
free upgrades to R4 for those who bought 3DS after the announcement.

Most edu. dealers verify student status, though that doesn't stop someone from
having a student purchase it for them. You probably have to be a student still
to upgrade.

I realize that, but _HOW_ does Journey _VERIFY_ that those Students are FULL
TIME Students and in fact are Eligible for the Student Copies in the first
place….
Just as a little experiment I had someone call them and when they asked about
full time verses part time student status….the Journey Salesperson told them
"Part Time…..NO PROBLEM….." Hugh!!!! That's a direct violation of the
educational software sellers contract…."NO PART TIME STUDENTS!!" Right!!
Based upon that Autodesk is being lied to about the status of these people and
they shouldn't even have thier first copy much less an upgrade to Release 4…I
would hope that Autodesk could rely on their "educational dealers" to play by
the rules but as I've just confirmed by a recent inquiry just these past
days….in Journey's Case…THEY ARE NOT!
You also bring up another majoy violation that takes place with disturbing
regularity…."someone haveing a student purchase the software for them"….
Because these violations seem to be the "norm" not the exception, as a dealer
I've got to take the position that there should be no educational copies except
for us internally by the facilities that are authorized to teach/use the
program at the educational institutions physical site only and that at the
point when a "student" feels the need for a full blown copy of this program he
then ceases to become a student and is in fact going in to business for
himself. At that point he or she should be required to purchase from a
non-educational dealer like the rest of the world that is expected to play by
the rules.
I don't beleive a full time student has a legitimate reason to own a full blown
copy of the software he is taking a class on unless he plans on using it to go
in to business for him or her self and that is where I take issue with the
student pricing. I'm also against Instructors as well as students using the
hardware at these particular institutions for their own "personal gain".
