Along this line, I believe XAOS's Penello is going to be able to achieve this effect with appropriate alpha masking; the package is pricey: $995.

At the 3DSr4 demo last week here in NYC, they had Xaos and HSC Software showing their IPAS plug-ins. I thought it was interesting that the Xaos guy primarily showed Penello effects on animations that were NOT generated with 3DS. In fact, he hinted that Penello and other Xaos tools would become available, at some point, for Windows applications. E.

Yea, I've mostly seen video that's been run thru their IPAS. It's pretty specialized, the effects they produce, that is.
