#Still crashing

Michael, I use ABCDir and it crashes all the time … any time there is an error in a lha or lzh file it will crash when you decompress, or list, or whatever. It's a very nice utility by very flakey. -sja

Steve, True, it does that with corrupted lha files, but apart from that it never dies on me. I launch almost all my programs from it, use it for extracting, compressing, listing and shifting of files, viewing of all kind of picture formats and so on. That's why ABCDir was the last thing I suspected, when last week suddenly everything went haywire. I was close to opening up the case because began thinking of a hardware fault. Michael, I'm using v3.0 of ABCDir … it's not just bad compressed files it'll die over, but that is _usually_ the cause … and it tends to forget where it is at times and keeps things ghosted that shouldn't be. But, overall, it's worth the hassles.

Steve, I have the same version. Both, under OS2.04 and 3.1 it only plays up on bad Lha files, but I must say that I spent a lot of time on configuring everything, a lot was trial and error. Michael Schumacher Formula 1 on Autopilot

Michael, Brian, and others who offered thier help, I found the problem with my machine crashing randomly!! Lots of digging and hairpulling on this one! It seem that something addressing the 1st simm on my GVP accelerator is amiss. I have 2-4 meg simms on the board, and whenever there is a simm in the 1st socket, it crashes, moving the simms down a notch to the 2nd and 3rd socket completely eliminated the crashing!! Am a happy camper now! especially since my CD-Rom and Multiface card arrived! a lot of new toys to play with now! BTW does anyone know if the CD-Rom is suppose to play audio CDs through the amiga hardware? AsimCD-Rom driver software has a program for playing the CDs but a friend of mine told me I needed to route it seperately to my amplifier and that it would not play through the amiga directly. Again thanx to all for their help and suggestions! …Steve Cruising on Autopilot from beautiful Coastal South Carolina

Steve, one thing you can try is to have the board checked by someone that is an electronic technician with heavy duty soldering experience. You may have a cold solder joint on one of the address chips or one one of the other support chips. Frequently, the problem with a chip is a soldering problem, not a chip problem. Repairing a cold solder joint is a snap. Seconds if the iron is hot, a couple of minutes if it was not. BTW, any decent tech should be able to recognize one, so you aren't limited to Amiga techs.

Yep, that's right, the Asim software doesn't play through the Amiga HW, but does activate the Music CD playback if your drive has that feature. My NEC 38 has a headphone jack on the front, and it works fine. Now, There IS a player program (YACDP) here in the libraries that is supposed to play CDs through the Amiga if you have a SCSI-II interface. I don't, so it didn't work for me. -Karl

Steve: I've missed most of this thread. What model Amiga are you using? I know the 3000T and the 4000(T) have an (undocumented) audio-input connector on the motherboard that is perfect for hooking up CD audio. It doesn't use the Amiga's audio hardware for playback. It simply mixes the CD audio and Amiga audio signals together so both are output to the RCA audio jacks at the same time. This means you only need one connection to your amplifer and that CD audio and Amiga audio can me heard at the same time. If you have any other Amiga model, you will need to route the audio-out of your CD-ROM to your amplifer with a separate cable. Wayne

Wayne: PMFJI, but I actually found some references to the Internal Audio Connector in the manual that came with my A4000. If you look under Internal Audio Connector in the index, you'll find 3 entries. After doing some further research, I found a company that could supply an adaptor to go from the 3pin header out to a bracket w/ RCA sockets on it. Their name is TTS Multimedia Systems, and the phone # is (408) 982-0653. I think they wanted around $20 for the assembly. I haven't contacted them in a year or so, but I've noticed an increase in places carrying a wide range of internal adaptor cables specifically for CD-ROMs. Even if they're out of business, you could probably find a supplier somewhere. Hope this helps…. Erik Flom

Erik: I'm glad the A4000 manuals have some documentation about the internal audio connector. However, I checked my 3000T's manual again and could find no mention of it. I found the connector by accident while looking over the schematics in the back of the book. Also, thanks for the info on the RCA assembly. I'm currently using a cable that was designed for MediaVision's PC audio cards. Wayne

I'm not surprised the 3000T doesn't document it. From what I hear, it was a very last minute decision. I mainly posted the info for anyone else out there who might be looking for an easy solution. Habe you noticed the audio going through the connector seems attenuated? On my 4000, the CD audio seems to come out about half as loud as the internal audio?!? Erik Flom

Erik: I haven't noticed the attenuation on my system. In fact, my CD's audio usually over-powers my Amiga's audio. Perhaps the 3000 and 4000 are different in this respect. Wayne

Hmm, kind of interesting. I'm assuming it's a difference in design between the 3000T & the 4000. Either way, it's nice to know that option is there. Thanks for the info, though. Erik Flom

Steve, I'm glad, you found the culprit. Stuff like that can really drive you round the bend. Michael Schumacher Formula 1 on Autopilot

Great, glad you found the culprit Steve! Your friend is correct in that the audio outputs of the CDROM drive need to go to your amplifier seperately. However, 4000's do have a connector on the motherboard where you can feed audio into it that will come out on the Amiga's RCA audio connectors. Also, some CDROM drives (Sony's, Toshiba 3401, Apple) can actually send audio over the SCSI bus. This could be used for direct sampling of an audio CD. // John (Warp 4040 & Emplant Quadra 840) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net
