#Help ME Please
19 messages in this thread
Hello everyone, I am a new amiga owner, 1 meg Amiga 500. I bought this from a
friend, but he did not have any manuals for it. All the Amiga dealers in my
area have switch to IBM or clones. I cannot find any programs for my new
machine. PLus I do not have a way to call compuserve with it.( i am using an
IBM to call now). First Can I use my current modem to hook up to my Amiga.
Second Would someone have a comm program that I could use to call compuserve
with (shareware). I would be gald to send you the disk and pay you for it. I
would also like to find out about this new machine can anyone help…. Thanks
very much. Bob Manis 73577,3176.
Hello Bob,
Welcome as a new Amiga owner, currently more user change to another
machine because Commodore is going smash. You can use the modem
on your amiga without any problems (normally), but you will need
probably another cable for the connection from the modem to the amiga.
If your amiga is equipped with WB 1.2 or 1.3 Ncomm would be one of the
best progs for you, with WB 2.1 Term or Autopilot would be better. To be
honest Term and Autopilot are "big" progs which need a lot of memory
and disk space (AP needs at least WB 2.1, 3 MB ram, 5 MB on the hard
disk for running).

Just for clarification, but Bob probably wont need a different cable, as
Amiga's use the same cable as IBM's. (Unless modem is a non-standard
modem.)
Of course, the modem has to be external for the Amiga to use it…

Bob,
a lot of (old) modems connect to IBM computers have 9-pin plugs.
As the amiga needs a 25-pin plug, he will need probably an 9 to 25 pin
adapter or a new cable. BTW what is cheaper, the cable or the adapter.

I forgot about the 9 pin serial cables. 🙂
I believe the adpter is cheaper, but not as reliable…

Franz, appricate your response. I do need a 25 pin modem cable..I am trying to
get a local ibm dealer to trace me down one. What I really need is for some one
to send me a copy of ncomm or some P.D. program so I can make my contact with
my Amiga to the Amiga forum. Do you know of any one in the area that would be
willing to do it. if so have them send it to Bob Manis 50 palmetto bay rd #107

thanks for your help. bob
>> Do you know of anyone in the area ………………….
Take a look at my signature. If you did not find someone who is willing
to send you I will send it to you. I always need something from the USA
e.g. books, software, etc. and a person who is willing to buy it for me
and send it to me. BTW where do you live ? Hilton Heads Is., where is it ?
My sister owns my old Amiga 500 and that is the reason why I still have
Ncomm 1.9 and a lot of other P.D. suff for Kick/WB 1.2&1.3.

Hilton head is part of the outter banks of South Carolina, we are a favorite
tourist location for much of the U.S. and Europe. If I don't get a respones I
will be glad to exchange with you. Thanks Bob
Robert, just tell your dealer you need an XT modem cable. Almost all
dealers stock these. I notice that most dealers that have never heard of
Amiga get confused on this (I know because I work for one :-).
