#Render Garden
7 messages in this thread
I just went to a demonstration of 3DS release 4. The Autodesk specialist
mentioned a device called a Render Garden. It apparently is a box of
motherboards and microprocessors that can render 3DS files at a high rate of
speed.
Has anyone heard of such a device? What exactly is it? Does anyone currently
use one? Brandnames? Cost?
Any info would be appreciated.
Chris,
Contact James Murphy (71165,1321). I just talked to him and to Matt
Armstrong at AM LABS in texas where it (they) are being built. Murphy has all
the info. I'm hopped up about it. They just got a vertion with 5 Dual Pentium
100MHZ motherboards running today. Hot!

Sanford,
Thanks for the info on render garden. I will e-mail James Murphy today for
info.

Good luck….I don't know how much they cost.

Hi Chris,
<< The Autodesk specialist mentioned a device called a Render Garden. >>
There have been times that we'd use the term render garden here in the Asoft
forum to represent a small cluster of PC's networked together using 3DS R3's
network rendering feature. A larger collection of PC's is called a render farm.
I do not know of a device called a render garden tho'..

Jonas,
Thanks for the info on render gardening.
I am still new to 3DS. I only have one computer now. I was reading in Inside
3D Studio and also the Advanced Users Guide about network rendering. Both
these documents said that you could utilized some of 3DSr3's network rendering
features even if you only have one machine. I am confused about what that
meant.
How can you do that? Does that just mean that you can create something like a
"print manager" which will allow you to prepare a list of files to be rendered?
Can you could render 3DSr3-4 files using Windows NT as an OpSys? It seems that
if you could, you would be able to take advantage of a multi-processor equipped
machine. Ofcourse, it may be cheaper to purchase several used dos equipped
single processor machines to use as a rendering farm.
Also, I am glad to hear that 3DS 4 is now shipping. I will probably upgrade in
a month or so. I wanted to wait until things die down a little.

This means you can model a project and then render to the network queue, work
on another, send it to the queue, etc, etc and then move your mouse to the top
of your screen to your Network Pull Down and put your self into slave mode. Now
3DS is in slave mode and it will render all of the projects that are queued up.

Sorry.. 3ds does not work under NT.

In the meantime, check out flip.zip and now chain1.zip in the animations
section of the lib for 2 examples of IK in use..
