Many months ago I entered the Autodesk University Image and Animation Contest
by sending a VHS videotape of an extensive Animator Pro animation recorded in
real time (along with the 20 MB flic and 8 MB sound file and script for
playing in real time full screen 640 on computer). Apparently Gary Yost was
so impressed by it that the Image Archive person at the time (B. Griswald)
called me to request that I send a new copy on Betacam SP, because it might
even be included in the Siggraph demo, even though that demo was originally
intended to be for 3DS only. (That's what she told me!) Because of that warm
reception, I thought the animation might have a good chance of winning in one
of the twenty two specialty categories of the Autodesk Contest, but apparently
it didn't. I received a message one day from Gary Yost saying that my
animation was not considered for the siggraph demo, even though he liked it,
because, of course, it wasn't 3D Studio. So now I'm wondering if anyone can
tell me if perhaps 2D animation (Animator Pro) is considered so unimportant or
unimpressive as a medium that it is no longer even seriously considered when
entered in contests, etc? Or the 8-bit color limitation? Does flashy high-tech
realism always win out over approaches? As I recall, the instructions on the
entry form did sound like there was a strong bias toward, or expectation of, 3D
productions. In any case, if someone, like one of the judges, would be kind
enough to tell me how my 4-minute production, "Hybrid Vigour", compared to the
other animations, I would be *most* appreciative. I can find no address for
the Yost Group.
I personally liked the piece very much, but the general consensus was that it
was too bizarre for most people's taste. (Remember, Autodesk is primarly a CAD
company, and mutating fornicating creatures is pushing it a bit.)

So Gary, I suppose my fancy schmancy rotoscope/page flip of the video magazine
titled "Shameless Naked Women" wouldn't qualify either, would it? <BG>
Hey, send it in and we'll run it by them! <g>

Sounds great! Right up my street <G>. Have him upload some to the forum and
we'll shower him with praise if we like it!
