Just installed R4 yesterday and tried out the color previewer in the Keyframer. Pretty neat thing, but I was wondering how do you get it to recognize morph keys? I use the morph track quite a bit and wanted to view a morphing shape in progress using the fast previewer. Please don't tell me this spendy upgrade doesn't recognize morph objects in the fast previewer. A quick search through the supplemental manual showed nothing to address this. -Jeff

You'd best ask Jonas any questions about the IPAS routines included with r4, since we're still waiting to get our copies. (And as you probably know, we weren't directly involved with the IPAS routines in this release.) – G

Oky-doke, if you could give me his CIS address it would be much appreciated. Thanks, -Jeff

Jeff, Well, you didn't want anyone to tell you, but: The Color Previewer in R4 does NOT recognize morphs. I noted this in the pre-release, and you will see it mentioned in the README.DOC for R4. Those are changes too late to get into the manual. Since the keyframer will show the morphs, one would hope that the Color Preview module would eventually be able to do so. Sorry for the bad news. I had one other question as well. The supplemental manual includes "self illumination" as one of the material attributes which the color preview recognizes. The scene with the morphs also contains objects which are all self illuminated. When I go into the color previewer all I get is one beautiful shade of black. Guess I picked a good one. Is "self illumination" also not supported in the color previewer? Guess I won't be using the previewer much. Oh, and what about the 8-bit graphics mode requirement? I have at least one IPAS that runs in a 24-bit main-display, but I can't use it if the display is set to 8-bit to accomodate the color previewer. I suppose I can just run it from the Materials Editor only, but jeezz. What the hell is happening? -Jeff

Jim, Well, Jonas will have QA look into it. The problem may be that there is such a limited color palette of pre-defined colors. The previewer pciks what's closest. I'll try to check it out on my projects. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, I really don't think that's the cause. I doubt the closest color to ALL my bright objects would be black! Anyway, I'll be awaiting your answer. FYI, all the objects in the scene are self-illuminated (galaxies and stuff)– there are no lights in the scene at all. Does the fast previewer require lights in order to shade anything? (I guess that's just the same question as before). -Jeff

Yup! FPreview respects your scene's lighting. Try cranking your ambient up to 255 temporarily and it should work fine.
