#Scanner Help
13 messages in this thread
I would like to use a scanner to capture images to be used in photo montages.
I'm hoping it will be faster and better than using a copy stand, freeze button
and saving as a framestore, followed by masking and resaving in TPaint.
What scanners will work with an Amiga, software/drivers needed (have ADPro),
and is it really going to be faster/better?
Thanks in advance!

Mike, the best scanner I've used is the new Epson 1200c. It's supported by
ImageFX 2.0. ImageFX can also do the masking and saving for you so you
won't have to use another program.

Thanks Kermit, I'll check it out.

What others have you used, by way of comparison? HP IIcx? Microtek? Of
course the "lesser" Epsons… Others?

I've used all the Epsons, many models of Sharp scanners and the HP IIxc
as well.

Michael,
I'm using the Epson ES-600C flatbed color scanner, but with Imagemaster. IM
comes with a driver for that particular scanner, and it works well. With
ADPRO, I believe you must order the scanner driver extra.

Thanks Betty
Epson woud seem to be the scanner to look into. Can you give me an idea of the
time it takes to scan and save the image to your hard drive?
Mt
MIchael, I've never timed it, but I'd think not over a minute. It takes a bit
of time to preview, select the parts you want to scan, etc. But the actual
scanning time is not very long.

I was hoping for an answer in milliseconds :->
Thanks for your input, it is much appreciated!

I have been using Epson's 800C, works great with ADPro. The advantages
are mostly that you do not have to worry about uneven light source. I
work with alot of logos, mostly on letter heads and business cards. There
is hardly any clean-up required!
Big difference from the old DigiView days, for those who remember the
early Amiga years.

Even lighting is definetly a big plus. Are resolutions and scan/mask/save time
comparable to copy stand method?
Thanks,

Well it is alot quicker — color on the 800C is done on one pass.
Resolutions depends on how much RAM you have. Higher the res, more RAM
needed — full color, even more RAM.
I capture mostly in grey, using as much RAM as I can. Then I will check
for contrast and gamma to get an image that will require hardly any
clean-up. Next I will scale down to the size I need. And save the image
with 16 colors. Import to DPaint for cleanup, then import to Alpha Paint
as a brush – adding face color, edge, & shadow – all in one step!
The Epson and Alpha Paint are a great combination!

Well, my Amiga 2000 has 18mg of RAM, which I believe is max :-<
Currently it takes about 2 minutes per image, most of which is spent saving,
reloading and resaving. As I do anywhere from 30 to 200 images per project,
quality and speed are essential to retain what's left of my sanity.
Thanks for your help!
