I'm looking for a system which will be used as a 3DS/3DS MAX graphic workstation with a PAR. Hoping to get a bundled system no more than $10,000, excluding software- to purchase probably first of the year. The system will be used to produce animations and also to demo projects to clients in house. Any suggestions? JB

<Any suggestions?> John, I suggest bumping up your budget, at least if you're hoping to run MAX. 64M memory and a PVR (I wouldn't suggest a PAR in this instance) would blow half your budget, plus you'd need a fast Pentium, good display card & high-res monitor, hard disk (system & for PVR), etc. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

To really get the most out of MAX, I would recommend the following. 1. A dual Pentium PC, or Dual Pentium Pro (P6) if you are mainly running NT apps. 2. A GLiNT Board (definately!!!!! a must have) 3. 48 or 64MB RAM 4. A DPS PAR or PVR. The PVR is a bit better, especially if you want sound, but it is more expensive, as are the drives, and the PVR works great under NT this is assuming you are going out to tape of course 🙂 5. A BIG monitor. MAX has a LOT of info on screen, and a large monitor running in High Res makes it a lot easier to handle. 6. LOTSA HD Space. -Peter

I'm doing virtually the same thing, and have costed out a P133, 64 megs, 2G system HD, PVR w/4G, hot video card w/4 megs, 4x CD-ROM, sound card, top-of-the-line 17" monitor, etc. Total is $10.5K. So, by shaving a little here and a little there, you could get a single-CPU system under 10, provided you don't need video capture. (I don't include it.) Hope this helps, SCL
