I have an Amiga 3000 and was wondering what it would take to get a decent modem
at a good price that worked in the Amiga, and what software could be used to
get to Compuserve/Internet.

That's easy, Randy
A PC/Mac modem should work just fine. Check the cable.
For CompuServe, download Autopilot. (AP.LHA) For Internet, download
IINST151.LHA

I don't know of any internal modems for the Amiga that are currently available,
but you can use almost any external one. Just attach it to the serial port,
get some software, and away you go. I use the Practical Peripherals modems
with mine.
We have lots of term programs available in Library 5 of AmigaUser, and special
CompuServe navigator in AmigaVendor, Library 9 (AP.LHA) if you have 2.1 or
newer OS.

Just about any external modem can be hooked up to the Amiga. The cables we
user are the same as on the clones, so that's not a problem either. The most
recommended brands of modems are USR and Practical Peripherals. There are
others that will work well also, but I'd beware of the really cheap ones as
they tend to have more problems than they're worth. I've been running on a
Supra 14.4 FAXmodem for a couple of years now and it's a darn good little
machine.
You might want to download IINST151.LHA from the AmigaUser libraries. It
will tell you the software you'll need to get your Amiga from CIS to the
Internet and it will install it for you too! There's some good discussions
about this going on in the AmigaUser Networking area you might want to check
out.

I have one question about downloading software. I have no way to get it to my
amiga. I am using a penitium at work, and have never been able to exchange
info from either machine.

The easiest way to transfer from your Pentium to you Amiga would be with
CrossDOS. If you have OS 2.1 or later, it is already a part of your system and
you just have to activate it. If your OS is older, you can purchase CrossDOS
for less than $30 and install it. Once installed and activated, you can
address your drive as PC0: and it will read/write MSDOS format; address it as
DF0: and it reads/writes AmigaDOS. You'll probably have to use 720K disks,
unless your Amiga has a high density drive, though.

There are several ways you can do this. If your Amiga at home is running OS
2.1 or higher you have Crossdos, you can format a disk in PC format on your
Amiga (or your PC) and sneaker-net the files that way. Or, you can send them
to yourself from work via CIS Cmail and d/load them to your Amiga at home.
Either way ought to work.
If you don't have Crossdos, there are other alternatives like Messydos
(which is either PD or Shareware) or you can purchase Crossdos as a stand alone
program. Hope this helps.

Asha, speaking of which, I downloaded it and tried to unpack it. When I
did, it crashed my 3000! The second time I tried using the LHAdir(?) in Opus
5.12. It would show the files/directories in there, but wouldn't unpack
anything. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

James, that is known to be a good file (IINST151.LHA), so something must have
gone wrong in your machine, or else you got a bad download. Many people have
used it, and you're the first to report problems with unpacking. Were you using
LHA 1.38?

Betty yes I was, it's all I use for unpacking .lha files. That's the second
file I had trouble with… can't remember the other one. If I have problems,
and can't get it to unpack, I delete it from the HD.
One other queston, can AMosaic, AmiTCP, etc be downloaded here on CIS?

Jim, yes, those files are here, too. I don't have the exact names for them,
but they will be in either Library 4 or Library 5 of AmigaUser. I believe
AMosaic requires MUI, and you'll find that in AmigaTech.
On your download – did it take an unusually long time, with errors reported,
etc? It's possible that you just got a bad download.

Actually, I don't know, since I had AP downloading them in the background.
I had another screen in front working on something else while the download took
place. Is there a way to capture all text while online on CIS using AP. I can
do that with Terminus, but I don't know about AP…

There are two ways to capture everything that happens in an AutoPilot session.
You can set the Log On on the SETUP screen, but there is a way to send it all
to a file – an even more complete record.
Have you read APDOCS? There are three versions in Library 9, the AutoPilot
library, of AmigaVendor. They all have the same text – just different
formatting. A bit out of date, but most of it is still accurate.

I don't think the latest amosaic is here, but then you can pick that up later.
I got it all working in one evening using ppp.device and a document that tells
you exactly how to set up amitcp. I cannot however remember what the document
was called and my amiga died recently 🙁 IT WILL LIVE AGAIN!

I just checked mine, both with LHAdir (which isn't supposed to unpack it
only show you what's in there and let you read the readme's or whatever) and
actually unpacking it. Worked fine here…
When you say it crashed your system, are you saying that the act of
unpacking it crashed you or something else. Sounds very strange to me. If
you've tried this again and it still crashes, try downloading it again. But if
LHAdir showed all the files intact, it shouldn't have crashed when you unpacked
it. The only other thing I can think of is that perhaps you aren't using LHA to
do your unpacking?

Asha, how come I thought you'd say that! 🙂 I thought that LHAdir would
unpack files if you highlighted them and copied them to another directory? I
must have been wrong there…

Exactly, when I did what I usually do, click with the left mouse button,
while holding that, click with the right mouse button, and drag the file to
where I want it to unpack, usually ram:. Works every time, except when I tried
it with that internet install file. That's when my system crashed. No software
failure message or nothing, just a black screen. Had to reboot.

That's what I may have to do… since I already deleted it.
