Asha, that's a very good question! Actually, it was one of the biggest problems
I had with Diavolo 1.27. When I bought it 11 months ago, a new version offering
such a feature was promised by Werner within a view weeks. Obviously, it took
much much longer… but well, we all know software development takes it time…
longer than expected.
I just have to ask Werner more questions:
1. Will you ASAP solve the crash problem described by you? You know Murphy and
stupid users like me 😉 Crashes can be a big disaster for me and my work…
2. Another big problem with Diavolo for a backup in background was it's nasty
wish to activate all upcoming windows/requesters. It happened to me several
times while programming: while editing a text and Diavolo running in
background, a requester was prompted and activated while I was typing. Because
of my typing (return and ESC), the requester was aborted without giving me a
chance to find out about the requester. In some cases Diavolo crashed when
aborting requesters with ESC. Did you solve this problem?
NOTE: Don't get the wrong impression by this message. I think there currently
is no better backup software for the Amiga. Diavolo always worked reliable for
me (beside all features, this is most important for me) and my DAT is fully
supported.

although I'm the uploader of the Demo, I'm not the programmer of Diavolo, but
was a beta tester of V 3.0 (well, Martin made me the first on the list because
I took so much pain for testing). The programmer's name is Martin Korndoerfer
(m.korndoerfer@nathan.gun.de).
I will report to him the filter bug that I mentionned – I blame myself on
having it not found earlier.
The crash problem when aborting Diavolo requesters has been solved in V 3.0. In
the previous release version, it could be work-arounded by setting the task
priority of the streamer task lower or equal to the priority of the harddisk
task.
And yes, when an error occurs or the backup medium has to be changed, the
requester Diavolo sets up will become active. If Diavolo uses its own or
another than the active screen, this screen will be pushed to front.
So the behaviour of the requesters is very much the like as the SysRequests
issued by AmigaDos when an error occurs. The problem is, in the case you are
working with an editor at the same time, that the Diavolo requesters also
accept the RET and ESC keys as an input, what may cause accidental replies.
As a programmer, you may want to have a look at the API of Diavolo 3.0 Pro to
customize the program to your needs.

I received Diavolo Pro V3.02 a view days ago. But the problem of making an easy
multiple volume backups still exists. Using filters just doesn't make much
difference. But I'm not sure. Maybe I missed a feature. But let's describe it:
1. Filters allow a more easy selection of volumes for backup. However, the
manual is unclear. For instance, when do Filters select specific files and when
do I select the complete volume? Or more precise, once a filter is created for
a whole volume, what about files added to the volume later? I had to try things
in order to find out the right way.
2. Still, making a backup of several partitions is a nightmare. Filters do
help. But what I want is: select the partitions to backup and "start".
Currently, I first have to make a filter (that is with predefined partitions…
something I often don't have). Once created I have to run that filter for
backup. However, the filter still requires me to select "Start" at the end of
the directory scanning. Now, scanning my HD can take up to 30 minutes. This
means, I have to get back to the computer after 30 mins in order to start the
backup. Very nasty especialy when this stupid requester becomes active (goess
what happens).
I think, the scheduler might solve this problem… but than, the scheduler has
to allow quick setup as I don't run backups on a regular base. I usualy run
backups when my computer doesn't write files or when I go the supermarket for
food (that's where I hate filters as I simply can't make a backup with
filters).
Anyway, as said, I currently don't see any better software than Diavolo and
maybe I can solve this problem… it's just that I don't understand why this
VERY basic feature is not implemented.
