#PC – Amiga …How??

Friends of the family has recently bought their boy an Amiga A500. It's used
mainly for games at the moment but I know it could be used for so much more.
Can I as a PC owner download Amiga files and pass them over to the A500?
If so what format does the diskette have to be?
What decompression softwaredo I need to get?
Any other tips such as good shareware drawing and wp packages would be very
appreciated.

Yes, it's possible! You just need the programm `cross-DOS' for the amiga. After
starting it, it's possible to format, write and read 720kb disks on the amiga.

If the Amiga has been updated to OS2.1 or later, it has CrossDOS as part of the
operating system. If not, CrossDOS can be purchased and installed. It costs
around $25-30. CrossDOS provides a disk system that makes the Amiga drive read
and write MSDOS format. It's really neat. Once it is installed, you can put a
disk in and read Amiga format by addressing the drive as DF0:, or as an MSDOS
drive by calling it PC0:, and it changes its way of reading/writing according
to the name you give. The A500 almost certainly has an 880K drive, so it will
need a 720K MSDOS disk. Some of the higher-end Amigas have high density
(1.76M) drives, and they can read/write 1.44m MSDOS disks, but I seriously
doubt that the A500 has the HD drive.
Almost everything here is compressed with LHA. Get LHA138.RUN from Library 14
of AmigaUser. It is self-dissolving. Tell him to put in into RAM:, and then
type
CD RAM:
LHA138.RUN
COPY LHA C:
After that, he can use it with the command line:
lha x path:filename.lha

I've been using an Amiga 3000 for my Video Production Business and recently
purchased a used laptop PC-Compatible for Communications purposes via
CompuServe. I've only had the PC for a few days but I have experimented in
down-
loading graphics to a DD disk then using it on the Amiga in a piece of software
called "PC-Task" which runs on the Amiga and operates like a 286. In PC-Task,
there is a command called COPYTOA.EXE which copies the IBM file on the PC DD
disk to the Amiga Formatted disk.
When in the Amiga, I then use one of several conversion utilities to convert
JPEG or
GIF to Amiga graphics formats.
It's a bit cumbersome, but it works. (The images look better than on the
PC!?!)
I'm hoping someone has an easier solution and waiting to hear about it.

The simplest solution would be to connect your modem directly to the Amiga 3000
and use Autopilot to talk to CompuServe. If that is not practical, then you
should be able to read the PC disks directly on the Amiga using CrossDOS, which
is included with AmigaDOS 2.1 (I think) and higher.

Is there some reason you're not using your Amiga to download these pictures?
Seems to me it would be a lot easier. If you have OS 2.04 or higher you can
use AutoPilot to automate your online time here. And if you have OS 3.1 you
can use datatypes to view the pictures and viewtek to convert them, if need be.
