I need to find out how to wrap an image (iff, gif or whatever) around a sphere. I seem to remember one of the older paint programs that did this quite easily (was it the digipaint I sold?). I have quite a few paint and imaging software packages but cannot find one that does this. HELP Thanks ..Carl

>> how to wrap an image (iff, gif or whatever) around a sphere. DPaint4+ (3?) will do this with IFF. It will even do it over multiple frames in an animation (RAlt+leftclick). I'm experimenting with it now, as I'm trying to come up with some ToolManager dock anim's in the NewIcon style (finally got the pallete right, whew) For GIF's, the utility GfxCon will convert GIF's, JPEG's, etc to IFF. And of course, it will convert your IFF's to whatever. If you have DPaint, right click on the fill gadget and choose wrap. After you've "picked up" your image. Hope this helps, Carl. Okay, okay, you lurkers…. 1) Open DPaint to whatever screen mode. Then load your IFF image (if not IFF then use GfxCon to convert it). If the default screen mode is wrong you will be prompted to change screen modes. Click on Yes. 2) Clear your screen. Make a sphere (filled circle). Load your image as a brush. Go to palette, choose Palette, Use brush. 3) Right click on the fill gadget. Choose Wrap. Okay. 4) Click on the sphere. You should see your image "wrap" around your sphere. 5) If you need multiple sphere in different sizes, right click on the lower half of the Sphere gadget. Choose wrap. 6) For anim's, again choose the Fill gadget but you'll have to hold down the left Alt button when you left click on your sphere. This is helpful for wrapping a picture of a planet around a sphere and having it rotate. For a rotating planet you'll need an anim brush, but we ALL know how to do those, don't we? 🙂 (I'm such a tease) – Phillip, on AutoPilot 1.80 _____T_____ Going Amiga 'till the Sun goes Nova! * * O * * B5>ST.all

Phillip… Many thanks for the tip. I'll go to DPaint right now and try. Wish me luck – your instructions seemed quite thorough so I shouldn't have problems. ..Carl

Carl, DigiPaint was one of the early Amiga paint s/w your thinking about I think. It did some very fine texture mapping onto a sphere. Not sure if IM R/t or ADPro can do the job now??? Good question… I'd just use LW or some other 3D package to do it, kinda overkill though. ….John

John… Thanks for the reply. Phillip came up with a solution that I'll try. Wish me luck. Knew I shouldn't have gotten rid of that DigiPaint. ..Carl

Carl, <I need to find out how to wrap an image (iff, gif or whatever) around a sphere. I seem to remember one of the older paint programs that did this quite easily (was it the digipaint I sold?). Photon Paint does it, and possibly SpectraColor (OXXI) as well. Asha Another day, another million colors

Carl and Asha, Just to add to the list, DPaint 3,4,5 has a step by step tutorial on creating an anim brush of a rotating earth. The world map is included in the Art Disc. You will find it in the chapter on Animation Effects. Al Berman A.C.E.S. Amiga Computer Enthusiasts Southwest Ct.

Thanks Al…I have managed to do it in DPaint 4 but am not entirely happy with the results. I need to work on it. ..Carl

ImageFX 2.x can wrap images on a sphere with true raytraced lighting and all. The paint packages simulate this with a simple warp that compresses the image into a circle, not a sphere. Kermit Woodall Nova Design, Inc.

Kermit… I don't have ImageFX 2.x only 1.5. Can 1.5 do it also? I really cannot justify the upgrade cost for this one feature as much as I would like to. ..Carl

Carl, <I really cannot justify the upgrade cost for this one feature as much as I would like to.> If you use ImageFX frequently, I strongly suggest upgrading! The differences between 1.5 and 2.1 are amazing! I found 1.5 a good program but it didn't have some very lovely features that I would have liked to see. With 2.0 and then 2.1, they've put some glorious things in there. I'm sure if you upgraded you'd find loads of features that are useful…at least I did..<g> Asha Another day, another million colors

Carl, the Sphere function was added in 2.0 – there's a LOT more than just this one new feature though! 😉 Kermit Woodall Nova Design, Inc.

Kermit & Asha… primarily use IMFX 1.5 as a frontend to my Frago Primera printer. At work I have high end machines with scanners and PhotoShop where I do all the scanning and prep of the images I later bring home to print on the Fargo. As good as IMFX 1.5 and 2.x are they just cannot compare with PhotoShop for the day to day work a photographer needs to perform on the images. IMFX is the best image on the photographic end of the art spectrum enough for me. I don't need to warp/lightening/blur/bend/solarize/colorize or any other of those. What I need is to spot/color correct/resize/crop/sharpen images and do it as easily as possible and as fast as possible. None of the Amiga Image processing software compares with PhotoShop in these areas. Most brag about their ability to distort images not just prepare them for output to a printing device. IMFX has virtual memory that works and so I like it (paid $230 a couple of years back). An up costing another $125 cannot be justified since I can purchase PhotoShop at the educational price of $248 to work with my Emplant. I want to support the Amiga developers, and understand the economy of scale but I have my own economy to worry about and so only upgrade now when there is real good justification to do so. Again IMFX 1.5 is my Amiga program of choice (because it has virtual memory and Firecracker support (I also own ImageMaster 1.6 and AdPro 2.5). Wish I could justify upgrading but the cost to benefit ratio is just to high for me. ..Carl

Just reread the previous message I sent and found it pretty confusing myself. We currently are having wet rainy weather and when ever tha t that happens the connection (via modem) to compuserve gets flaky and apparently is dropping characters and lines all over the place. I am sorry for the messy message and am not going to try typing any more when it is wet outside. :^) ..Carl
