I've got an AVI file and would like to view it on my Amiga. I d/loaded Xianim but can't figure out how to get it to work. It does bring up a screen (blank) but it "displays" only the text of the AVI on my shell (nothing on the screen). I've tried reading the docs but they are extrememly confusing to me (I did manage to bring up the help screen, but it doesn't help). I'm runnin an A2000/040 with Picasso board (OS 3.1). If anyone can clarify this I'd really be grateful! Asha Another day, another million colors

Rafael, <>I've tried reading the docs but they are extrememly confusing to me< I have the very same problem. I'm human too! ;-)> There must be SOMEBODY's that gotten this (or another) program to view AVIs on the Amiga to work! ….doesn't there? ;/ Asha Another day, another million colors

Asha, There's is a commercial programm called MainActor manufaturated by Villagetronic (the same guys who released the 3.1 ROMS some moths ago), that can play AVIS up to 256 colors. It doesn't work with 24 bit AVIs by the moment. They still developping more upgraded versions. Regards, (Where do you loose the pretty rose… 🙂 ) Jose L. Gonzalo

Jose, <There's is a commercial programm called MainActor manufaturated by Villagetronic (the same guys who released the 3.1 ROMS some moths ago), that can play AVIS up to 256 colors. It doesn't work with 24 bit AVIs by the moment.> I only have one AVI, so I don't think going the commercial route is really appropriate at this point; I can always go play it on my husband's clone. But there were two players in CIS's libraries and I was rather surprised that I couldn't get either of them to work right. The AVI I've got is a short one in black and white, so it really shouldn't be a problem. Ah well…if my collection of AVIs increases substancially, I'll look into MainActor, thanks for the information! Asha Another day, another million colors

You're welcome. >Ah well…if my collection of AVIs increases substancially, I'll look into MainActor<< That's been starting a common problem for all Amiga users. I really think that Amiga Technologies can't forget that AVIs is today a standard, and maybe they sould be start to thinking about how to implement that on the Amiga… Regards, Jose L. Gonzalo

Jose, <I really think that Amiga Technologies can't forget that AVIs is today a standard, and maybe they sould be start to thinking about how to implement that on the Amiga…> Hopefully, they already are…. I just wonder why there are two programs that are supposed to work and neither seems to…doesn't make sense. Perhaps it's something in my machine, it's been known to be "haunted"…sigh… Asha Another day, another million colors

Sounds like my tooltypes didn't work for you, eh? Let's see about getting you set up right so you can see these neat B5 AVI's. Okay, first TAPAVI (no, I can't get Xanim to work either.) I can get it to work from WB, but you can work it from CLI without WB loaded to check for memory usage. Next set your stack to 10000. Yep. I had to up my stack, but you probably have done this as well. ToolTypes; Sound=On, Loop=Off, Buf=2048 (Buf, not BuFF) Doc's say will work on KS2+ but best on AGA. hmm….. you have AGA (no?) Also ReqTools, but most everyone has this……. hmm…. what else could it be? Just ran Welcome.AVI from the B5 files using the above. Have you tried using DosTrace? This has cleared up to many porbs to list. HTH. ^^^^ – Phillip, on AutoPilot 1.80 _____T_____ Going Amiga 'till the Sun goes Nova! * * O * * B5>ST.all

Phillip, <Sounds like my tooltypes didn't work for you, eh?> Unfortunately, I didn't get around to trying them…sigh.. I just discovered that I've somehow deleted the Tapavi file (silly me!). So I'll re/down/load it today and try the tool-types and try loading it from WB instead of the shell (I've got enough memory it shouldn't make any difference in this case. I will try to get back to you soon on this, but life, at the moment, is just rushing around at 9999mile/hour and dragging me along with it. I've saved out your messages though (mind like a steel whatchamacallit)… Thanks for the help, hopefully it'll work! BTW, I don't have AGA but I do have OS 3.1 and a picasso board. This AVI is in black and white, however, so it really shouldn't make a whole lot of difference, should it? <Have you tried using DosTrace? This has cleared up to many porbs to list.> What's DosTrace, and how would using it help me? Thanks again!! (^^^^ back atcha!) Asha Another day, another million colors

>> Picasso board This should work fine. >> What's DosTrace, A utility that displays the system calls when a program is running. Great for finding out that the program is bombing because it's trying to access a file that you don't have. You'll get "failed" messages when an illegal call is made or "good" when all is well. It's a bit buggy with some programs, but it's helped me a few times with setting up AmiTCP and the rest. ^^^^ – Phillip, on AutoPilot 1.80 _____T_____ Going Amiga 'till the Sun goes Nova! * * O * * B5>ST.all

Phillip, <>> Picasso board This should work fine.> "Should" being the operative word here…:( I've got the sound playing (which is better than before) but still no picture….. Maybe I'll d/load DosTrace…. Asha Another day, another million colors

I have heard that if you have a graphics card and OS3.1 that you can run AGA stuff, is this true? Stew

Stewart, <Have you had much luck in getting AGA only software to work with this setup. I have heard that if you have a graphics card and OS3.1 that you can run AGA stuff, is this true?> I have been able to run a few things that are described as AGA as well as ECS compatible in the higher color modes (a few shareware games, mostly). But anything labeled as AGA only does not work (Brilliance, DPaint AGA, any AGA only game) as the programs were written to the chipset. Is there something specific you're trying to run, or are you just curious? Asha Another Day Another Million Colors

Asha, Extracted from the (amiga|xanim).readme files, try this: —————–8<————————— setenv X11/askmode 1 ; will ask you for a screenmode setenv X11/gfxcard 1 setenv X11/displaydepth 8 ; couldn't get more 😐 Stack 20000 ; more if you like, less crashes.. xanim +CF4 +fX ; X is verbose… —————–8<————————— This plays 24bit AVIs up to 88MB (more if i had such one) on my A4000/40. The colors are transformed to a 256-table, but visible. hth, Dieter Goettmann jetting on AP1.80 from Karlsruhe, Germany

Dieter, <This plays 24bit AVIs up to 88MB (more if i had such one) on my A4000/40. The colors are transformed to a 256-table, but visible.> I'm beginning to wonder whether not having AGA is the problem here. I tried Tapavi last night (thanks to Phillip) and I did get the sound to play but no picture. I may d/load Xamin again and try what you suggest, but I'm really beginning to get discouraged here….. Asha, sorry not to mention it explicitly before, 'cause using a picasso board was self-evident to me in that case (e.g. "setenv X11/gfxcard 1"). As i remember, AGA works, but i'm using a picasso mode. So it should do without AGA also. regards, Dieter Goettmann jetting on AP1.80 from Karlsruhe, Germany

Deiter, <sorry not to mention it explicitly before, 'cause using a picasso board was self-evident to me in that case (e.g. "setenv X11/gfxcard 1").> Aha! It seems that the problem with Tapavi is an AGA problem. Or at least we know it does run on an AGA machine and doesn't on mine… The docs for Xanim are confusing to me. If all I wanted to do was display one AVI (named Kosh.avi) from ram: when Xanim was also in ram: and so was I, what, exactly would I need to type so it would display properly on the Picasso board? Is there any way to get it to play the sounds too? Thanks in advance! Asha Another day, another million colors

Asha, as i remember, i had also problems with Tapavi…since it is a descendant of Xanims which supports less avi formats, i pushed it back to the archives 🙂 I haven't tried the audio options ( +Ae ) for no need. You may also need +Av[0..100] for volume control. For your avi file in ram: here are the suggested commands (the layout of the last script was killed by the textfield gadget 🙁 …hope this will do better…) ;—————–8<—-run-this-as-a-script———————- setenv X11/askmode 1 ; will ask you for a screenmode setenv X11/gfxcard 1 setenv X11/displaydepth 8 ; couldn't get more 😐 ; Stack 20000 ; more if you like, less crashes.. ; xanim +Ae +CF4 +fX Koshi.avi ; ^ ^ ^^ ; | | ||– verbose ; | | |— don't load complete anim into ram, only needed frames ; | |——- video option. There are lots more, this one works ; | in most cases ; |————- Audio enable ; ;—————–8<—-end-of-script——————— BTW, Xanim is reported to run on a A2000 with a Retina GfxBoard… if you get it, you may send a message to its maker, Terje Pedersen. hopefully this helps, with kind regards Dieter Goettmann jetting on AP1.80 from Karlsruhe, Germany

Dieter, <BTW, Xanim is reported to run on a A2000 with a Retina GfxBoard… if you get it, you may send a message to its maker, Terje Pedersen.> Thanks for the script, we'll see how it goes. I did re download Xanim so when I get a few spare minutes I'll see if I can get it to work. I really appreciate the help! 🙂 Asha Another Day Another Million Colors

I've had XAnim running on a plain old ECS-based Amiga 2000.

Ron, <I've had XAnim running on a plain old ECS-based Amiga 2000.> How'd you do it? Of course, I think I've got to tell the program that I want to show my picture on the Picasso board (as the file is 8 bit). Unfortunately, I've been too busy lately to try it out again…. How did I get XAnim working on my ECS-based A2000? I just downloaded it, unarchived it and read the directions. You may have to play with the switches (it's command line driven, of course).

Read the DOC file, there is an option that lets you use your graphics board as the output device in a window. This should aslo speed things up as you don't have to convert from planar to chunky. In any case, read the documnetation nice and slow. You'll see that is works very well. Alex… Flying on Autopilot 1.80

I've got Tapavi giving me the sound for my AVI but I've yet to get more than a black screen for video…. Asha Another day, another million colors
