Kevin, >> How does one make these trees into single objects (easy to move << the Schreiber trees are broken up into multiple objects for one simple reason: 3ds has a 64k face limit and the program makes a new object when it needs to stay below that number. Move them as a selection. >> I've got a P-90 w/32M RAM. I would think that I should be able to generate a stupid tree. << Not necessarily. The trees can be so geometrically dense that it's easy to exceed that amount of RAM. We've used Schreiber's Nursery extensively recently and had good luck with it – certainly no crashes come to mind. We do have 128-196mb RAM on our systems which may help. Also, be sure to check with Schreiber to ensure you have the latest version – the first version exhibited that instability for me too (some years ago) and may have been fixed.
