#255 Material limitation

I am currently working on a very large architectural model approx. 20mb., and seem to have run into a problem with merging 3ds and prj files. The message "already 255 materials in use" pops up and the default material automatically becomes assigned to all incoming objects. Is there any way around this undocumented limitation, besides having to break up the model for seperate renderings, (what i'm doing now)?

Gary, >> "already 255 materials in use" … Is there any way around this undocumented limitation, besides having to break up the model for seperate renderings << I'm afraid not. You are using the only workaround: layering your animations, which is a good approach to learn.

Hi Gary, hi martin! I had the same problem last week. I made an animation through a complete supermarket. I think, I solved the problem that way: If you are opening 3DS without a project, you receive a message at the ground-line: _186 material loaded from library_. Most of them you don't need in your project. So i made a new project with a new material-Library, which has only 1 material. Then I imported all the external referenced 3ds-file include lights, animations and so on to complete the project. Yesterday, I delivered the videotape to my client… Hope that helps a little bit. Greetings from germany Claus Diekmann

Gary, << Is there any way around this undocumented limitation >> There isn't any way that I know to get around the limit. Maybe someone else has an idea. It is a documented issue that a lot of people know about and the limit will be removed in 3DS MAX. Mark
