I need help in using the render fields option in 3D Studio r4. I'm using the PAL version of the PAR. I've searched through the manuals and also the book 'Inside 3D Studio', but the only information there seems to be something along the lines of 'Use Render Fields when you want really smooth motion'. Help would be appreciated as I have a couple of animations where the camera pans from left to right accross a scene, and there seems to be a 'tearing' effect on alternate lines during playback of the animation. Thanks, – Brian. (I'm using Hamid's connection at the moment.)

Had same problem; go into 3DS.SET and change FIELD-RENDER-ORDER to the other way (can't remember which is which, but the problem is that you've got it backwards.)

Thanks Stephen, I'll try that. However the animations in which I experienced the problems I mentioned, did not use the render fields option at all. I gave up using that rendering option some time ago, as it seemed to make the tearing effect VERY obvious. I think that your suggestion may solve the problem though. I wonder if you or anyone could give me any more detailed information as to exactly how and when to use field rendering. Perhaps I should put this in the wishlist section for 3DS Max (future user-manuals) as there really isn't enough information about this topic to be found anywhere. Thanks again, -Brian.

Hi Brian, << as there really isn't enough information about this topic to be found anywhere. >> What questions do you have after reading pg. 7-208 in the 3DS Reference Manual? jonas[adesk]

Apologies, Jonas. I should have checked the index in the manual beforehand. I've just checked that page and it (embarrassingly!) DOES contain all the relevant information I need. Thanks for your help! -Brian

Hamid, if you're getting the tearing problem when you rendered whole frames (not fields), then I'll bet you still had the PAR set for importing fields. Note that when you're importing fields and looking at the single frames as they come in, it's not going to look right even when it's properly set up. But when you're playing it back, then it should look right. SCL

Thanks, Stephen. I'll check that out as soon as 3DS has finished rendering this animation test-render it's in the middle of. -Brian

The tearing you are seeing when rendering to fields is only evident on a still frame. When the image is moving fields will make it move much smoother. You need to be playing it back on an interlaced device like a TV though. You don't want to field render a .flc. Take Jonas' suggestion and read about it in the 3DS manual. DM

Thanks, Dave. I'm using the PAR so I havent rendered any flics for quite some time. I've already found the section in the manual which I thought did not exist which seems to clear up my queries about the topic. Thanks again. -Brian
