#3ds animation output

Can anyone recommend a board that will output an animation file or sequence at
640×480 ,24bit color,30fps? I am looking for a low cost solution that does not
require a dedicated harddrive. So far the only product I have found with these
specs is the mars pro2 board. Unfortunately, this product still hasn't made it
to market. If anyone could drop a quick note detailing possible products ,
dealers and personal experiences with these products, I would be extreemly
GRATEFUL

I just ordered a MARS II board, and have been promised delivery in three to
four weeks. They claim the first boards will be in the US in two weeks. If
you have the time and are willing to gamble that the board will deliver as
promised (I have no indication it will not), you can contact Daewoo.

Rich, I'm sorry it took so long for me to respond. I just got on CIS a month
ago and I still haven't figured out the difference between mail and messages (I
havent been to the ASOFT forum in a while)
Anyways, Have you seen a demo of the output from MARS II Pro? When I spoke
to the folks at Daewoo they told me the board did not require a dedicated hard
drive.
I went to a meeting last night and got to see the DPS Perception board.
It requires its own hard drive but the image quality is exceptional. If you
could drop me a note when you get your board I would really apreciate it.

you do not need a dedicated hard drive, this board will knock your socks of .
the quality of the graphics is out of this world. Hey for $700 its the best way
to go.

The company that makes the mars II is Daewoo. They can be reached at
1-800-432-8905. The specs sound great but I have yet to see
this product on the maket.
One product I have seen is the DPS Perception board. It outputs broadcast
quality BetaSP video for a modest price. Excellent image quality! DPS can be

After spending some time talking with the Daewoo people and the DPS people at
Siggraph I finally found out one of the major differences between the MARS II
board and the PVR: MARS II uses MPEG2 compression/file format and the PVR uses
M-JPEG. This give the PVR a lower compression ratio but a slightly better
quality image….also an M-JPEG animation is easily editted (with the right
software) while it is more difficult to edit the MPEG2 data….but the MPEG2
file can be distributed and decoded via software, while the M-JPEG will need
hardware decompression!

I am using an Imix video cube for editing. It uses its own
compression algorithim named wavelet. I need to get the highest quality image
on beta-sp for digitizing by the imix. according to your assesment, I would be
better off using the perception board.
So how was Sigraph? I read a review in Shoot that said there was a plethera
of companies searching for artists. Was that true? I am currently working in
Washington, D.C. but I'm interested in knowing how much of a demand there is
for artists in other markets.

The Perception outputs 4:2:2 digital component quality which, I think, is
better than BetaCam, so this would be you best, as opposed to the MARS boards.
Siggraph was great, and there were quite a few firms looking for help!

Huh?? You are comparing pure uncompressed video (BetaCam) with compressed
(PVR) output, the BetaCAM has cleaner output, assuming, of course, that you put
the animations on the Beta frame-by-frame or with an UNCOMPRESSED disk
recorder.
This can be seen especially when editing and going down a few generations.

I am trying to get my animations into an Imix video cube (mac-ahhhhgh!)
with the highest image quality possible.

I watched the "progress" of the MARS's entry into the market, and called Daewoo
several times trying to get info, and it seemed like lots of good talk, and no
substance. I saw the thing at Siggraph, and it looked great. But, will it
ever be available? They started advertizing in about March, and I don't think
they have a product yet. Calls to Daewoo can be a bad experience. I try to
keep an open mind, but I think if a Korean company wants to operate in the
U.S., they've got to be comfortable with the language, and twice their phone
was answered by people who simply could not communicate.

I wasn't endorsing the MARS product just offering a file here in our
libraries. The file is a review, fairly objective one at that, and I passed it
on to Rene as his note specifically asked about that board. The board is out
there and in use, I think they even have a MARS III out already. If their
tech support is as abysmal as you suggest then I would also be swayed to look
elsewhere for a solution. I've been using the PAR myself and I've been pretty
satisfied.
