I've been told many different stories about 3ds functionality under 95 from much faster to not at all. I'd like to know from an Autodesk representative exactly what the functionality of 3ds r4 is under windows '95 on a Micron 90 with 64 meg of ram and a Diamond Stealth 64 video card.

Mike: >> I'd like to know from an Autodesk representative exactly what the functionality of 3ds r4 is under windows '95 on a Micron 90 with 64 meg of ram and a Diamond Stealth 64 video card. << First off, Autodesk does NOT support running 3DS under Windows95. Having said that, it can be done and the general scuttlebutt is about a 10% loss of speed in rendering IF you get it running. Many people have mentioned that using ALT-TAB to switch between applications has caused a black screen crash with some video cards and hardware. I don't know off the top of my head which specific hardware configurations cause this problem. FWIW, I do not recall a single forum member stating that they can render at a faster clip under '95 vs. under DOS on the same machine, nor do I recall anyone stating that they could achieve even equal render times under '95 when compared to DOS on the same machine. – Bob Ritger

>> I'd like to know from an Autodesk representative exactly what the functionality of 3ds r4 is under windows '95 << Good luck on that one! <g> FWIW: I reboot to DOS 7 and run 3DS because under W95 the graphics is just too slow and memory is too severely reduced (about 10 megs or so less). I would only run it under W95 if I had to use the machine for other tasks. – ej

Could you clarify your message regarding WIN 95. If we install WIn 95 any draw backs to running under "dos &" that comes with WIN 95 ?

>> If we install WIn 95 any draw backs to running under dos << Not that I can tell. Just make sure that you run it from DOS alone (press F8 at boot up and choose command prompt) and not as a task under windows where it's too slow. I do run it under windows when I am tweaking a texture map and don't want to wait to reboot. – ej

Hi Michael, Autodesk does not endorse the use of 3D Studio with Windows 95. It doesn't always work and it reportedly runs slower. -Grant Blaha [ADESK]

If Win 95 is installed on a machine, can 3dS work well by going to the "dos 7" prompt ?
