#PAR Problem

Hey, we are doing a traditional animation (drawn) using digital ink &
paint. We are using our PAR board to compile the frames from Exabyte. The
project is animated at 24FPS and is being transferred to Exabyte using 3/2
pulldown for video. When we play back the compiled animation, we get
"stuttering". The company sending us the inked & painted frames says they
have not seen this problem before when compiling off Exabyte to Abekas.
Has anyone else encountered anything like this? We have to use 3/2
pulldown or the animation comes out way short. With the pulldown it looks
like acid trip crap. We have tested the animation without 3/2 pulldown
and, apart from being too short, it looks fine. This is definately
happening because of the pull down. The folks providing the Exabyte feel
that it is a PAR problem. We are way open to input.

Stephen: Could you explain what '3/2 pulldown for video' means? Are you
referring to some kind of scaling?
Just as an initial thought, do the ink & paint people have any other
method of transferring frames, rather than Exabyte?

Trent,
3/2 pulldown for video is the means by which film–shot at 24 fps–is
transferred to video–which is 30 fps. I think it has to do with the
adjustment the shutter (or whatever) needs to make to stretch 24 fps into
30.
We created the cell animation at 24 fps, had it electronically inked and
painted, and then the frames were transferred to Exabyte as Abekas files.
When we took the frames from the Exabyte, the fields ended up being
reversed. Because of the (frame/time) stretching effect of the 3/2
pulldown, we were getting strange looking jitters and such.
Anyway, we've discovered that the fields were reversed and are working on
getting them straightened out into the PAR.
As for Exabyte, it seems the fastest, easiest way to handle all the frames
that'll make up a ten minute cel animation. I couldn't imagine doing it
another way.

I believe what Stephen is refferring to is the 3/2 pulldown to compensate
for the differences in frame rates from Video to film.
