#Strobe flicker…still
5 messages in this thread
Here's a quick question for those who dare. Thanks in advance
for any gracious forum replies.
I'm using a Sanyo GVR-S950 vtr connected to a P5-100 with a
Targa 32+ board. I render 512 x 486 x 1.23, (32) bit TGA's, Field rendering ON,
and record the S-video output of the Targa card. I still experience some
strobing as if I did'nt field render. I tried that 'field render order'
suggested fix to no avail. Any suggestions other than joining the nineties and
getting a PVR card would be appriciated. TIA.
Chris,

Could you elaborate? What exactly do you mean by strobing?

Thanks for the reply Paul,
What I mean is best described by looking at what non-field rendered output
looks like. My problem looks very much like it. It's almost as if there is a
slight difference in the backgrounds of the odd and even fields. At normal
playback speed, the background seems to flicker slightly (strobe). I know that
I have rendered viable fields because I have also output frames that were
sucessfully recorded to Beta SP at another facility.
I'm thinking maybe it could be a gamma problem? I don't really think it
is a VTR problem. I think it is somewhere between rendering and the VTR, mainly
the Targa card. The probelm is not the worst in the world, and the strobing is
not as bad as non-field rendering, but noticable just the same. Any help will
be appreciated. BTW- how's the job search going?
I'm in a similiar situation myself – feel free to private Email to discuss that
one if you wish. Thanks.

Chris,

Frame rendered animations shouldn't flicker at all at any speed, whereas
field-rendered animation will flicker as stills. There *should* be a
difference between odd and even fields. I asked what you meant by "strobing,"
because frame-rendered animations with lots of movement (objects or camera)
won't look as smooth as they would field-rendered. I guess I would call some
frame-rendered stuff "jerky."
I have a Targa+64, and used to have a Sanyo GVR-S950… I had some problems
with the Sanyo… but if it has recorded good animation for you it shouldn't be
the problem.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with gamma. I would suggets checking out your
field-rendering order in the 3ds.set file. Try reversing it, and do a quick
test render with a simple fast moving object going across the screen. Try it
with both field orders to see which looks better.

Slow. I'm currently producing a large animation for a motion ride, and am
finishing another cable TV commercial, but am still keeping an eye open for
other work. Good luck on your search!

Paul-
Thanks…I'll try it & pray for a PVR!
