I think brainfade has set in.
Why can't I find gvpscsi.device on my system ?
That's what I told HDToolbox and any other app that cared to ask. While setting
up Shapeshifter I tried to find it but couldn't. I have a vague idea that it
may be in ROM on the GVP card, it certainly isn't in DEVS:, nor on the GVP
install disks.

my guess is that the gvpscsi in the Expansion-library puts the device in
memory evertyme 'BindDrivers' is executed. It's certainly not on my HD.

I think its in the GVP FaaaaaaaaastROM. Try typing "version gvpscsi.device" in
a shell.
You don't need to give a path. The system will find it.

Don't feel too badly, I can't either! I'm using a GVPSCSI II board, and I
know it's working (or I couldn't be typeing this!) but I just did a search for
gvpscsi#?, #?scsi#? and #?device#? and found nothing like gvpscsi.device. It's
got to be in a ROM on the GVP card, or it's just magic…;/

Seems when I used the Zetec CD filesystem the GVPSCSI.device was on it's
install disk. Since I no longer have that filesystem disk I might be full of
balony. I have two different GVP utility disks sitting next to me neither one
has this device. There is one file in the devs directory called GVPSCSI.amhd
which I have no clue as to what it's for.
How's that for a shot in the dark :^) ?

As for gvpscsi.amhd, that's the driver for Amax partitions.

I don't even have that! I'm almost certain it must be on the GVP board
itself, possibly in the ROM 'cause neither my hardrive nor my streaming tape
drive (nor the demo of Diavolo which I used a week or so ago) would work
without it. Other than that guess…I haven't a clue….:)

I got's a friend with a GVP and whatever setup. This whole thing has got me
ready to pick up the phone :-/. I'll check in with you tommorrow.

Please tell me what you want to do, and I'll try to help.
If you are trying to use HDToolbox with your GVP host adaptor, just change the
tooltype to SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpscsi.device.

No, I think that's something else. the gvpscsi.device is, I strongly
suspect on the GVP board itself in the ROM.

But it has to be copied to memory sometime.
Everything in the Expansion-drawer is executed with the BindDrivers-command in
the startup-sequence, so I think the gvpscsi in there puts the device into
memory.

So its really like what "resident" does for commands ? I wonder if there's some
way to find out what else is in there ?

Sorry, your right, that was gvpscsi. I would assume then that it does not
exist. It must be kind of like DUART0 and DUART1 for the MultiFace Card III.
they are DosDrivers that you then goto your terminal program and assign as a
device. i.e. DUART.device 0.

I think you're right except that it MUST exist ! How else could HDToolbox
ExpertPrep and Shapeshifter find it ? So I conclude its lurking unseen in RAM
somewhere.

The gvpscsi.device would be in the ROM on the gvp card. Otherwise, you'd
be in a catch-22 situation. You need the file to run the hard drive, but
the file is *on* the hard drive… so you can't get at it. Part of the
Autoconfig process is to initialize ROM drivers on the cards.

Yep, the gvpscsi.device is in ROM, or more precisely FaaastROM.
I upgraded my GForce FaaastROM with the GURU ROM, so I don't have
gvpscsi.device anymore, now I've got omniscsi.device 🙂

Speed…no, I haven't realized any speed increases from the GURU ROM, I didn't
expect it really since speed is a limitation of the controller itself.
Reliability…most definitely yes, it works great, installation is simple. The
GURU ROM is much more configurable than the GVP FaaastROM and it supports
removable media devices better It is RDB compatible with the C= standard too,
which is something GVP never really had exactly.

I have been having trouble running the new, faster type
muti Gig drives on GVP 030 and 040 cards. (read/write errors, ect.)
Do you think the rom upgrade will help?
Are there any downsides?

I noticed a very small speed increase using Guru ROM. After installing it I
got 3 crashes in a row then everything settled out. I find Guru ROM correctly
scans the SCSI bus now. Before, it was hit or miss as to whether all my
external devices would be recognized even after a reboot.

Are you happy with Mr. Guru? What model amiga do you have and do you have ram
on your GVP board? What kind of transfer rate are you getting on SynInfo? And,
what percent CPU use?
I've got a 2000 with a PPS040/28 board with 32Mb of 32bit ram, a picasso board,
and emplant and a Supra board with 6Mb of ram. After 3 months of screwing
around, I'm getting about 1.4Mb/second with 40% CPU use. I follow Init040 in
my SU Sequence with Addmem FastSys. Then, after setpatch: Set040 -fz. The
OmniScsiCtrl is set synchronous. I have no ram on my GVP controller board.
What do you think?

It's in that file.
