#Accom and 3DS??? how?
12 messages in this thread
G'day All,
Was just wondering if there was an IPAS available to get YUV files out
of 3DS? Or alternatively, How to get 3DS to talk directly to an Accom disk
recorder?
Anyone out there been through this one already?

Title: Abekas YUV file format BXP (Working Demo)
Keys: ABEKAS YUV BXP IPAS GUS HEXACHLOROETHANE XIPHOID
This is a working demo of a BXP that will handle Abekas (A60/A66/Diskus) CCIR
601 (4:2:2) file format. It has reciprocal
anti-aliasing and chroma interpolation filters. The catch… It will only read
and write QYUV files (quarter test render files) at
360×243. You must set the rendering resolution to 360×243 with an aspect ration
of 0.9. To use, just copy it over to the PROCESS
directory. When reading or writing a file, specify YUV as the extension.

I need to get my Accom WSD XL digital disk recorder to talk to my PC with 3DS4.
Accom says there is a driver specifically written for 3DS but that Autodesk has
it. Can you help me get this DDS to accept my rendered files for output to my
Beta deck?

I'm not familiar with this driver. The only utility that I'm aware of is…
Abekas.zip in the Utilities section of the lib.

Easy to do!

Someone is pulling your leg! <g> Accom has the driver, I should know, we
wrote it for them! It is given away free to anyone with an Accom. Works
great, handles network rendering from all your machines. Contact Accom
directly, they should be able to send it right out to you. They've been
shipping it since NAB of this year. Call the main office at (415) 328-3818.
The Accom is a great machine, I'm glad to see more people using them for 3DS.
Between the Accom WSD/XL and Abekas Discus, there is simply no higher quality
output for animation.

Thanks Gregory! Glad to see there is someone out there who knows what is going
on with this DDR. I agree that this is a fantastic device and it has worked
flawlessly with our SGI hardware. I hope it works as well with 3DS4.
I have an additional question. We have mostly SGI stuff and have just bought a
P100 and 3DS4. We now need to connect our PC to our SGI/MAC network so that
our developers can send renders directly to the Accom over the network. My
question is what network software would be best for our PC to allow us to do
what we want?
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure it will for you, it has for us.

What you want is:
1) Make sure you have the NFS networking software for the SGI. It is an extra
charge option, about $600 or so.
2) Get a copy of PC/TCP from On-Net Software. This is the same software that
Accom uses on the WSD/XL, and is required on at least 1 PC for rendering. The
others could be PC-NFS, or anything similar. Might as well get TCP/PC for
everything if you're starting out fresh, though.
3) Run it! That's all you will need, in addition to a few ethernet cards and
cables, of course.
We have basically the same thing running here, from a SUN network, and it has
performed flawlessly for five years. Let me know how it works for you.

Have you ever tried the 'SOSS' NFS server for WinNT? I've used it to expose the
PC's drives to the SGI…
John:

No, I haven't even heard of it! You must have too much time on your hands,
searching around for all these great new software packages.
>> I've used it to expose the PC's drives to the SGI…
Sounds like fun! Where do you get it?
Greg Pyros
Hmmm, talking to myself again…
>> JF said "Have you ever tried the 'SOSS' NFS server for WinNT?"
Is this the one on the "NewT for Windows NT" CD ROM from Walnut Creek? Looks
like a whole bunch of good NT utilities, I was wondering if anyone picked it up
yet?
Greg Pyros
I found it a long time ago on CICA, one of the nicest WinNT sites. I had also
used the DOS version of 'SOSS'. Yes, believe it or not, the shareware
community had made an NFS server for DOS. Clumsy, but it worked.
I've got so many people asking me about networking PCs to Macs to SGIs, I
should either write a book or write a FAQ. I've been thinking of
"productizing" this into at least a set of floppy disks or tapes that I can
send to people who ask about it… The LightWave-heads are all aflutter about
networking, too.
I should upload them here, too.

Just the FAQs, ma'am.
