Escom could have a problem with the 4000T if they can't get any 060's ( ok,
they could just sell the 040, but they need the 060 ). I suppose escom could be
buying up all the 060's causing a shortage, but they are probably hit as well.
Phill
At present their stated goal is to supply 040's in the original CBM tower
configuration and go from there.
As yet I've heard of no firm delivery date.

As far as I am aware, they are planning on 040's & 060's as all mail order
companies in the uk are advertising both. I wish they had a better case design
as the current one looks horrible ( like a cheap pc clone ).
Phill
My guess is the A4000/060 as such will never happen. Motorola simply cannot
supply the 060 in large enough quanitities. One Amiga company involved with
making accelerators was recently told to expect them in dribs and drabs — 50
here, 50 there… This company has now decided to take Amiga acceleration in
another direction.

Can you be any more detailed? <g>
Mr. Zombie
Hi Jeff
>Motorola simply cannot supply the 060 in large enough quanitities. One Amiga
company involved with making accelerators was recently told to expect 060's
in dribs and drabs<
I can confirm this.
Do to problems with PC lightwave and high prices
on Alpha LW (now $2000.00), some of my consumer base are
chomping at the bit to upgrade there Amiga 2000's,
but not an 060 to be found. ;-(
DKB,Softwood, and Magic Tech all gave me the same story.
Mike Brennan, Sir Render A/V
What other direction?????? I can't believe that motorola are still sitting on
the 060, I guess no-one has picked it up for embedded applications, otherwise
they would be making them by the truck load. Motorolla have always sold many
more 680×0 for embedded applications than computers.
Phill
If they are having production problems or using limited facilities, it is quite
possible that they are being produced in low volume and the embedded market is
getting it all. I mean if I say made robot or milling machines and all my
control code was in 68K family and I wanted to jump the jones, not just keep up
it would be worth my time and money to put in a large bid, on a large volume of
chips. Many people would argue that people are changing to the PPC chip, but
if I had controller code that was written in the days of the 68000, chances are
my base routines are tight and efficient. This would make an `060 quite fast,
and I wouldn't have to worry about a sloppy port to the PPC. There are so many
rushed ports and hacks and things that are thrown together, that it is just a
matter of time before we get some very serious failure of the digital world.

Exactly, the 060 was only designed to keep the embedded people happy, motorolla
didn't want it to be put in a desktop, only to be used as a stop gap so that
people could port to the ppc in more time.
It wouldn't suprise me if motorolla wouldn't starve the desktop market just
because they wanted to stop support of 68k. They wouldn't lose any money as
they can still sell the 040 for desktops and pursuade anyone else to move to
another chip ( and the few chips that motorolla make for computers nowadays I
don't think they would miss it ).

I would tell you that one of the "embedded applications" of MC68020 is FADEC
(Full Authority Digital Engine Control) for turbofans. And that's not a joke…

Is that really true? I use FADEC a lot without knowing I am really flying an
A1200…

It is a double lane with double everything 68020-based computer in fact.
Redundancy.

Double 68020's? The real high reliable stuff is supposed to use different
processors running independently developed programs. But I've never seen that
myself.

I find it interesting that you know the Pratt & Whitney PW4168 Turbofan Engine
uses a MC68020 in the FADEC (also know as the Electronic Engine Control). I
work at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut, US, as an Technical Instructor and the
EEC170 is my _specialty_! I assume you know the FADEC from the Airbus A330
aircraft.
Let's see, you are from Berlin, so do you work for/with LTU? They are the only
operator of the Growth PW4000 engine in Europe.
BTW, I use my Amiga 2000/040 to render cool 3D anims for my EEC and engine
training at work. Neat, Huh?

Ah! Then all you need is Scala MultiMedia MM300 for the presentations!

John
Thanks for your reply.
No. I don't work at LTU and I was not talking about any particular turbofan.
That's something that a friend of mine told me once. With the redundancy, and
backup independent overspeed system and so on…

You're really lucky!!! I envy you! B-)

Can someone upload the new 040 case? Have they changed to A1200? Since they're
using the original CBM design for the 4000, the 1200 should be the same too.

Hank,
I've mailed the pic straight to you, sorry about the quality – it was scanned
from a trade mag.

> I've mailed the pic straight to you,
Could you UL it to the Amiga section here on CompuServe? I think others would
love to see it as well (including me!) 🙂
Greg
Greg,
Not a problem (apart from AutoPilot deleting the original file!) I've
despatched it up to AmigaUsers 'News and Reviews' file area.

Stuart,
You have to upload it too me I guess, as it was received as binary and I can't
find it downloaded anywhere.
Please try again.

Hank, if you have problems with an email download, you can go back to the
mail menu and type UNDEL to recover stuff that's been deleted recently. I dunno
how long, though, but at least a few days.

Hank-
If you received it, it's probably in your AutoPilot root directory.
Mr. Zombie
Paul –
I checked all the AP directories and can't locate it. Asha resent the Escom
file and it is here now, but when the .IFF was sent AP had an invalid path in
it's preferences to download it to, and I can't find it.

Hank,
If you have Quarterback Tools, it's got a "Locator" module that searches
specified directories/devices.

I may just try the LIST command noted, or check out QuarterBack tools. Still
curious where it went, although the resends were successful.

The a1200 case is the same but the a4000T case looks like a very cheap pc tower
( it's ugly ).
