unrolling cylinder?

I am trying to make an animation of an AC motor (basically a cylinder with wires sticking out of it)unrolling itself into a flat plate. Does anyone have anyestions as to the best way to do this? Do I want to try morphing this, or would that be too rough? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Darin Friedmann

I am actually trying to make aan animation to explain how a linear induction motor works, which is basically an electiric motor that has been unrolled and flattened. I therefore only really need to animate the core and surrinding coils. I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have. Thanks. -Darin

You mean like the motor in a VCR or in the newer floppies where the coils are on the PCB arranged in a circle ? -Peter

I am actually trying to explain how a Linear Induction Motor in new meg-lev style trains operates. It is basically as if the stator and rotor of a standard electric motor are sliced on one end and then rolled flat. I am not sure how to do this and have the coils of the stator remain intact as it unrolls itself. The problem may be easier to think of in reverse, i.e. how would one animate a flat sheet rolling into a cylinder? Do you have any ideas? Thanks, Darin

I am not sure if this helps… I needed to animate cloth unrolling from a spool. What I did was to animate the spool spinning first. On top of this I placed a flat 'box' shape of the same color as the cloth… such that no seam was visible when rendered. I then took the final output (a FLC file) and manually added some 'noise' to the flat surface to indicate the it was also moving. The result was a sheet of cloth being pulled from a spool (which was acceptable to my customer). I hope this helps…. Tom Wojtowicz

Thanks for the advice. How exactly did you add this "noise" to simulate motion? It sounds like it may be useful. What I am actually trying to do is show the cylinder with a split in it rolling itself out into a flat sheet. It sounds like it may be morphing kind of thing,but the cylinder has wires coming of it that need to remain attached as it unrolls. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have taken a flat sheet and rolled it into a cyclinder using bones and linking the bones. It comes out very well. This is all I had to do. Make a rectangle in the 2d shaper, when imported into the lofter add as many vertices as you need, this will depend on the level of resolution you are trying to achieve, and set your steps to 5 or so. The path is a straight line,once again the length is dependent on your need. Loft it in the 3d editor set up your bones. Once again the number of bones need depends on your project, then use the linear array function for the remainder of the bones, set your pivot points, link the bones, go to th the keyframer, using IK only allow rotation in one plane and animate the first key bone over time, the others will follow and wala a flat sheet rolling into a cylinder. Murat, you certainly can use grids. I did not need that much resolution and it was easier for me to apply two different materials to each side of the rectangle. Sam
