David, I assume you've heard of AutoPilot. I hope you have as you sent your message to Steve who wrote and supports one of the best CompuServe GUI interfaces and it's only available on the Amiga. Check the AmigaVendor forum. And if you'd rather spend more money on CompuServe to use a pretty CIM type product, unless something has changed in the last month or so, Cserve will not allow a HMI product to be written for the Amiga. This is even after they've annouced that they will only support their HMI interface to CompuServe in the future. For years Steve has been trying to get CompuServe to port the required HMI libraries to the Amiga but CompuServe will not do it or allow others to do it. >And if you'd rather spend more money on CompuServe to use a pretty CIM type product, .. yes, sometimes I would like to do that too! I do like Autopilot very much; its good for the forums but not for all CIS business. Sometimes I want something pretty, too. And: isnt the AMIGA t h e graphics computer!? Why dont we get an graphics interface for CIS? > For years Steve has been trying to get CompuServe to port the required HMI libraries to the Amiga but CompuServe will not do it or allow others to do it. If this is really true, we should all write a message to CIS telling them that we quit unless they let Steve do it! Michael Nicolaisen (Intel outside) Greetings from Germany

Gerald, << For years Steve has been trying to get CompuServe to port the required HMI libraries to the Amiga but CompuServe will not do it or allow others to do it.>> SJA did reply to a thread a month or so ago saying he submitted a proposal to CI$ to write a WinCim type navigator for the Amiga using their HMI protocal. Seems the jury was still out at that time. Whether or not he has gotten a reply to date is unknown to me. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you want it, don't give up the ship yet. Mr. Ahlstorm has probably generated a fair amont of revenue for Compuserve so I think his offer is being looked at anyway. Jim

I complained at Cserve last night about not supporting the AMIGA. I receiced the following reply: >>To: Michael Nicolaisen Fr: Monika Stephan / CSCS Re: Support of HMI for Amiga Dear Mr. Nicolaisen, Thank you for using feedback. No doubt you've heard that terminal emulation is obsolete at CompuServe. This is sometimes phrased as ASCII IS DEAD. These statements have been taken out of context and have caused some confusion. Let me clarify what "ASCII is dead" means:terminal emulation has become very undesirable in the context of most of the information services. Most command driven users interfaces are non-intuitive, suffer from lack of uniformity, and are just generally viewed as uncool by many. But command driven (ASCII) interfaces are compact and efficient once you learn a specific interface, so we are NOT making a religious effort to eliminate them from our systems. Our top development priority at CompuServe is to create new and better easy to use products and services for our customers. This means that no NEW CIS ASCII applications will be developed. Gateway products will be HMI, or viewed through an HMI converter. (HMI or it's successor), and new CIS applications will be HMI only (e.g., 32-bit Forums) ASCII users will see a decreasing percentage of CIS, and WOW will not support any ascii applications. WINCIM's terminal emulation is supported, and will be for the foreseeable future. We have enabled others access to our HMI protokoll and toolbox, so that they can create tools for all kinds of platforms and systems that interface with the CompuServe Information Service. Many of the third party offline readers are currently in the process of changing their products to interface CompuServe via the HMI protokoll. Thank you for your interest in CompuServe. Please feel free to use feedback again if you need any help. Yours sincerely, Monika Stephan Customer Support Munich<< Michael Nicolaisen (Intel outside) Greetings from Germany

This sounds good; but has any of the "top-dog" Amiga people on CIS actually recieved any info/data? It would be great to finally see an AmigaCIM!! Gregory Donner Internet: 102673.1743@compuserve.com

Gregory…. Nope…they have not made it available for the AMiga. I asked Steve about this only a week or so ago, and he's heard nothing since our last round of messages about this some months back. —Betty

Why would you want a crippled piece of junk like CIM? All we need is the libs to adapt AutoPilot and we are glolden! . C. Davey

"We have enabled others access to our HMI protocol" is clever doublespeak from the Compuserve rep. Note he didn't say "all others."

Michael, The letter you received is just a 'boilerplate' message. When they say they have given others access, they mean they have licensed HMI to third-party developers for MSDOS and Windows…..they do not mean they have made it available to other platforms. This means that all computers except Windows, OS/2, and MacIntosh will be left out of everything new that comes to CIS. I seriously doubt that the person who sent you that message even knows that the Amiga does not run one of the three approved operating systems. —Betty

Betty, Her signature indicated she was in Munich. Maybe she has heard of the Amiga and might recognize the importance of that interface. Hank Videology, Inc Where you always get P.O.M.P. and Service under all circumstances

<<We have enabled others access to our HMI protokoll and toolbox, so that they can create tools for all kinds of platforms and systems that interface with the CompuServe Information Service>> This is wierd. Normally their responses seem much more "canned". We'll keep twisting their arm. Maybe someone should mention to them ATG has already sold 8000 1200's since the rerelease. They might be glad to fill the niche once the lemmings hop on the MSN Bandwagon. Jim

I was told that the address to which one should write is CSI:JSNELL. I might add that only optimistic and friendly messages will help. They will simply ignore any other kind, but are usually receptive if we are nice. —Betty

Betty, <<I was told that the address to which one should write is CSI:JSNELL.>> Not real interested in HMI for the Amiga. AP works great for what I use CI$ for. If I need pictures I visit the web. Always glad to help if we decide to bury them with e-mail. <<but are usually receptive if we are nice>> I'll give them lotsa :-)'s and B^)'s Jim

Several weeks ago, we did have quite a letter-writing campaign to CompuServe regarding HMI for the AMiga. Some of their replies indicated that they might be relenting – but nothing has happened. We still don't have the libraries. —Betty
