I am composing this message online, having spent the better part of the month
of October unsucessfully getting on the Internet through CompuServe on my Amiga
3000, unable to fully use AutoPilot for lack of good documentation on how to
use this fine utility, and unable to get AmiTCP running. Heck, I can't even
download interinstall 151 using AutoPilot, and I don't know why. I think I know
why I quit CompuServe 5 years ago after not using it for three years (at $1.50/
month even) Wasted 2 hours at work trying to initialize our Modem on CIM for
Windows, so I can't even get on InterNet using CompuServe and Windows. I think
this is all a big conspiracy of H & R Block to get us to waste a lot of time on
line, spending money on CompuServe, for a service I can't see much improvement
in in 5 years. I don't think I've missed much in being off line. Do
appreciate the help that fellow Amigans have offered, but I think we're
jousting with windmills.
Anyone can use AP (with the right hardware) even without docs! AND the docs are
very good, some of the best around…they actually tell you how to use the
software, not what feats of technical programing heights have been reached.
You must be trying to make it difficult (some people have that talent <G>). The
NET is a different story, not so easy. But I made it, so anyone can. Is there a
users group near you? That's the best way to learn how to use the Amiga &
software. don't be afraid to let a teenager tell you the secrets
..they LOVE to teach.

having read the answer of Gracia to you and I agree with her. But tell us
something more about your hardware equipment (modem, handshaking and so on)
instead of complaining 😉 With united forces it must be possible to solve your
problems.
Modems and WinCIM for Windows that is another story. Use your Amiga, it will
make it possible …

Did you ever download the APDOCS file from AmigaVendor, Library 9? The
documentation there is pretty complete. (And I wrote them myself, so please be
at least a little bit kind about them.<g>)
For downloading a single file with AutoPilot: On most screens other than while
you have a split-screen for typing replies…..
Load in the forum in which the file is located.
pull down the menus.
One says: Single download.
Select that
Type the EXACT name of the file in the requester that appears.
That's ALL you have to do. AP will get it next time you sign on.

If you're having problems with AutoPilot, please ask, either here, or in the
AmigaVendor/AutoPilot section. It truly is a wonderful program, and the docs
seemed, to me, at least, quite comprehensive. You did download the docs right?

What did you do?
Try this, go to the AmigaUser row on AP and click on Files, it will display
a requestor. Click on Single File, when the next requestor comes up type in
IINST151.LHA, hit return and OK. Then try going online with AP and see what
happens. If that doesn't work, please tell us what DID happen so we can help
you get it working correctly.

Since millions have successfully used WinCIM (and/or DosCIM and/or
MacCIM) and thousands have successfully used AutoPilot…then I would suggest
that the problem isn't in the software or its documentation..but in your
understanding of the documentation.
AmiTCP is more difficult, but if you understand the underlying
concepts…it too can be mastered. And the install scripts available here do
make that job much easier.
