#Live and Learn

Betty, Asha et al,
Thanks again so much. I've been intuitively coming to grips with all of this
and discovered that my dearchived downloads were appearing in my Systems
directory. I have not figured out why typing "CD RAM" was not working as it did
when I dearchieved AP, but with OPUS I have been moving the downloads into RAM
and going from there.
Betty, the word wrap problem, I must tell you, occurred with apdocs.lha once
dearchived. It was the same with the text version as well, and I manually
wrapped every line correctly (you'd think I would have learned what it said
very well in the process).
Anyway, learning to correctly illuminate segments of text suddenly struck
instinctively. I simply need to hold down the left mouse button for about two
seconds after it is clicked on any word or letter. Then as I move it with the
button still clicked I can illuminate any portion I want either above or below
the original starting point.
As for getting stuck on AmigaUser, this has remained a mystery as suddenly it
worked, then didn't again. I have found a solution, however, which is to check
the "Stay Online" button. Of course, I must go offline in the "Hands On"
position.
But in my enthusiasm and haste to discover the wonders of the download world, I
have made a real boo boo and wonder if someone might know exactly what I should
do to correct it. I downloaded a new set of icons and colors for the Workbench.
Several of them showed up as redundant drawers of a new image superimposed
haphazardly over the originals in the Systems drawer of my Systems directory.
I didn't like what I was seeing. I was not happy with the colors of the test
installation, of the images or the icons and so I deleted the entire thing.
When I did, my Systems drawer was deleted as well.
I have Workbench 3.1 However, I do not have the software. I imagine that's not
kosher, but someone who did some work on my system installed it for me without
my prior knowledge, so I wasn't complaining. The software I have is 2.04. When
this deletion occurred, I discovered a few problems (there are undoubtedly
others I am not yet aware of).
1) Two shells (No. 3) disappeared and the third would not open.
2) My SCALA program would not open. A warning comes up saying that it cannot
find a font.
3) The font on this screen has changed. It is larger than before and when I
receive ANYTHING now, it is very difficult to read as nothing wraps correctly.
I tried something in the interim, which is that I installed the System drawer
from my 2.04 software. The shell works again, though it now says No. 1. Does
that make any difference?
However, the font problem remains.
Is there something I can do, or is the solution to reinstall what was lost from
3.1? Or need I reinstall everything? As far as I can see, everything else is
working OK. The Prefs drawer is still there, so are the tools.
Well, live and learn.
Frederick
P.S. I just found the wrapping problem on my own letter upon importing it. I
then wrapped everything correctly and upon saving and reopening the window, I
have discovered that it has unwrapped.

I assume by this you have the hardware 3.1 ROM in your system, and simply need
the 3.1 diskettes…?
If so, then you _can_ buy just the diskettes & manual from Software Hut (or
other various mail order places).

Frederick,
To solve the OS 3.1 problem, I suggest you buy the software from one of the
mail order houses (or a local dealer if you're lucky enough to have one) and
re-install it. You may wind up with even more problems running 2.04 on a 3.1
ROM.
You may want to go into sys:prefs and see what font you've got selected, and
change it if it's not working right for you. Also, if Scala can't find it's
font, you might need to re-install the fonts from the Scala disk and/or run
fixfonts (I think it's in your system drawer, or should be).
Good luck, and hope you get it all working right again!
