#Syquest crashing Amiga

I hope some of you out there with experience on Syquest drives can help me
out. I just installed an internal 270 Syquest and mounted it where my internal
second floppy (DF1) used to be. I've connected the drive up to my GVP SCSI
board as unit 6, and it is the second drive on this chain (the other drive is
my 1gig Seagate on Unit 0. Here are the problems:
FIRST: I'm getting an icon that says "DF1????". I have an external floppy
hooked up to the DISK DRIVE port in the rear which was being used as DF2. Now,
however, it's not being recognized at all. I want to use my ext. as DF1, since
I removed my second internal drive to make room for the Syquest.
SECOND: The Syquest seems to work as it should, because I managed to backup
my Workbench and Toaster software to it. However, whenever I stick a floppy
into DF0 (my 1.73 floppy), the minute I eject it I get some type of feedback
from the Syquest which causes my main Hard Drive light to come on and then the
whole Amiga crashes. I've also had this same problem if I boot up with no cart
in the Syquest, and later insert a cart while on workbench. What's causing
these problems?
THIRD: When I first turn on the computer, my 1gig HD doesn't want to boot.
I think it's getting confused with the Syquest. If I do a Warm Reboot, then
the Syquest seems to "shut up" and my 1gig boots normally. Any idea what's
causing this?
As a note, I have the Terminator Resistor packs plugged into the Syquest.
According to the manual, IF THE SQ3105S/SQ3270S IS THE LAST OR ONLY DEVICE
CONNECTED TO THE HBA, YOU NEED THE SCSI TERMINATING RESISTOR PACKS. Since my
Syquest is Unit 6 and my 1 gig is Unit 0, I figured this means that my Syquest
is the last drive on the chain.
I think the problem is with the way I hooked up the SCSI cable or the
termination of the chain. I have a SCSI cable with 5 plugs on it; one for the
SCSI board, the other four for drives. I had GVP board hooked to the first
plug, my 1 gig hooked up to the second plug, and my Syquest to the last plug.
I don't think it makes much of a difference, but I figured it would help if I
mentioned that.
Just for reference: I disconnected the Syquest from the long SCSI cable and
rehooked my 1gig to my GVP board with the 1 to 1 SCSI cable I was using before.
Everything works as it did before, except I still get the DF1??? icon. I hope
someone can help me out. (System specs are below.)

Last drive in chain doesn't mean the highest ID number…it means the
last physical drive on the chain. You need to do one of two things, leave the
terminators on the Syquest, remove them from the 1 Gig drive
OR…remove the terminators from the Syquest and put the 1GIG as the
last physical drive on the cable.
In either case, make sure the last physical drive is attached to the
last connector on the cable.
As to your floppy, there is a jumper inside that says whether DF2: is
internal or external. You need to remove that jumper. I *believe* it is J103,
but could be wrong and don't have my manual here right now, look in your manual
for jumper settings.

Yup, that was the problem all right. I also found the jumper for the floppy
drive—-it's 301, not 103. (Just for someone else's reference.) Things are
working beautifully now; thanks.

You need to remove a jumper on your motherboard,
it's jumper J301, and it lives on the motherboard next
to the floppy ribbon cable, if memory serves me.

You may want to use a program such as expert prep to see what the boot priority
of your drives are.
Your floppies should be +4, your "Boot" drive -10, and any additional "mount"
drives at -128.

Not true.
The scsi id# is just an adress so the controler knows who it's speaking to.
What they mean is, the last _PHYSICAL_ device, which is the last drive
on the scsi ribbon. Which ever drive is the last _physical_ device on the
chain needs to be terminated. DON"T TERMINATE BOTH DRIVES !!!
If you had the 1 Gig in your setup before, it should have been terminated,
since it would have been the last physical device.(it was your only device)
If you did not remove the terminating resistors, you were double terminated.
This will cause BIG problems.
So….. If your sysquest is the last _physical_ device, you must remove
the termination on the 1 gig.

That was the problem all right. I also found the jumper for the floppy
drive and have it working right now. Things are working beautifully now.

I have GVP Faast Rom which tells me what the boot priority is. My boot
drive is +1 and everything else is -10. (Floppies unknown.) Is that O.K.?
