Anybody had occasion to use the roller buffing machine
that HP sent out to owners of its jet printers?
Is there an Amiga program which will allow the use of
the buffer?

Please tell me more. I have an HP550C. Was it perhaps only American owners who
were recipients of this roller buffing machine?

From whence do you hail? If you live in Canada, then (if you
need the kit) you should have gotten it.
I could find nothing regarding any other country. Not a clue.
HP says they sent out kits to owners of:
HP Deskjet
Deskwriter 520
Deskjet 550C (mine)
560C
which were manufactured between June '93 and March '94.
HP says that if your printer begins to act up paper-feed wise,
like not picking up a sheet each feed cycle, or picking up
several sheets often, then this little machine buffs the rollers
(which apparently were not manufactured to specs during the
period in question).
I have a 520 at work which was remiss in the paper-feed
department, and used my buffing machine with the MSDOS program
that came with it. It worked flawlessly, and so does the paper-
feed now.
The process buffs the rollers for 20 minutes! Yes! 20 minutes.
I got to thinking there would be nothing left of the rollers,
but when finished and all the debris removed, it worked well.
Now to the Amiga. I need a program which will duplicate the
MSDOS prog for the Amiga. The alternative is to take my printer
to the office and MSDOS it with the buffing machine which I
would prefer to avoid…

Thanks for the info. I am in Belgium, in fact. I think my machine dates from
the period you quote, but I have not had the sheet feeding problem so far. If I
come across anything for the Amiga, I'll let you know.

Great! Thanks. When folks were initially discussing the need
for this buffing machine on-line, it was assumed that some
enterprising Amigan progammer would find a way to duplicate
the DOS prog – but I have not seen anything.

Good. Be aware that it kind of sneaks up on you. I went thru
denial when it first began at the office. The HP printer at
my office gets WAY more use than my home printer (naturally!),
so that is where it first showed as needing the rollers buffed.
Now after the buffing, it works like it did when new.
I'd be sure that HP will furnish you a buffing machine if you
need it. You might avoid the rush by writing to them for a
machine before you begin to have problems…

I forgot to mention that the official HP name for this machine
is "paper feed repair kit".
