Rodney,
Have you transferred files between your Amiga and your IIGS? I am trying to
figure this out and I don't know which of my cables to use. I have a gender
changer on the Amiga and have my modem and printer cables from the IIGS to
choose from (I have cable adapters [IIGS to DB-25 adapters then attached cables
to those for my Hayes and my ImageWriter I].

Rex,
If you are trying to hook the IIGS and the Amiga directly together,
you'll need a NULL modem cable. You can't use a standard modem cable as the
handshake and data lines will have output->output and input->input rather than
output->input and input->output.

all you need is a null-modem cable. This is a modem cable with pins 2 and 3
crossed. You will be able to transfer then with no problem. I have taken the
lazy way out. I upload to a local BBS from the Amiga, then download from the
BBS with the IIgs. If I could only get my printer cables all figured out, I
wouldn't have these problems.

Package B ($199.00), I can't afford to buy any more cables (since I am
continuing my video production work, I'm saving up for Mimetics Genlock –

A NULL modem cable (what you need) reverses pins 2 and 3 and in most
cases, also pins 6 and 20 and pins 4 and 5 so each computer thinks it's hooked
up to a modem rather than another computer.
Example:
your setup proper setup
pin 1->1 1->1 frame ground
pin 2->2 Tx->Tx 2->3 Tx->Rx
pin 3->3 Rx->Rx 3->2 Rx->Tx
pin 4->4 Rts->Rts 4->5 Rts->Cts
pin 5->5 Cts->Cts 5->4 Cts->Rts
pin 6->6 Dsr->Dsr 6->20 Dsr->Dtr
pin 7->7 7->7 signal ground
pin 8->8 8->8 Carrier Detect
pin 20->20 Dtr->Dtr 20->6 Dtr->Dsr
You may ignore the rest of the pins and if necessary, can also ignore
the pin 1->1.
The abbreviations are:
Tx = Transmitted Data
Rx = Received Data
Rts = Request to Send
Cts = Clear to Send
Dsr = Data Set Ready
Dtr = Data Terminal Ready
Hope this clears up some of the mystery.

I have the 501 memory expansion board from CBM. I don't think there is any
particular advantage to using any other brand than price.
As far as cables go, the reason that I am having trouble with the printer cable
is I am trying to use it from the Amiga with a parallel to serial converter on
the parallel port. Then, I want to hook it to a switchbox so that I can hook
the printer to the IIgs also. So far, no one has been able to help me with the
pinouts, though.
