can someone help me? I can't get devs/mountlist to accept my 5.25 drive

If you are daisy chaining a 5.25" drive off an external 3.5" drive via
an A500…you might have a problem. Some of the external 3.5" drives don't
properly pass all the required signals to the 5.25" so it won't work.
I just got a message from someone else who had that same problem, and
he stated the way he got around it was to put the 5.25" drive first off the
A500 and then put the 3.5' 2nd and have it powered externaly.
If you don't have an A500 and/or the 5.25" isn't the 2nd drive on an
A500 (or A1000) then check your mountlist…make sure the DF number and the
UNIT number match up…they should both be 1 if the 5.25" is the only drive
attached to the Amiga and both should be 2 if they are daisy chained off an
external 3.5".
Also, the Amiga won't recognize the external 5.25" even if properly set
up and mounted if you turn it's power on after you turn on the amiga's power
and also won't show up in an INFO list until you do a DISKCHANGE to tell the
Amiga you have a disk in the drive.

I've also given up trying to run my 5.25" off my external 3.5". It _used_ to
work okay, but then I lent out my machine; the borrower returned it with the
_German_ external 3.5" (which is much quieter), not the Japanese.
I tried another external drive, also German, with the same disappointing
results.
The thing that worries me is Commodore says _not_ to install the 5.25" before
the 3.5" drive in the docs that accompany the 5.25" drive. I'm hoping that the
reason all seems to work is that the 5.25" drive docs date from pre-Kworkstench
1.2, when hardware needed to identify itself rather than being Mounted.

As stated in my earlier message, a user has informed me that he has
successfully added the 5.25" as the middle drive and adding a power supply to
the end external 3.5" drive. In fact, he is able to run Transformer with this
setup just fine on an A500.
This same person also advised me that CBM told him that some of the
drives (I presume the first set or so of German drives) don't properly pass the
buss so a 5.25" attached to one simply won't work.

Is the power supply necessary for the end external 3.5"? I have plugged my
external 3.5" into my (independently powered) 5.25", and it _seems_ to be
running fine (with no disk read errors).
Is the 5.25" doing the 3.5" any harm? I hope not.

I don't know if the external power supply is "required" or not, I only
know what I was told by someone else. My information from this person was that
they contacted Michigan Software (who apparently sell an external power supply)
who told them it was agood idea.
If you are working ok, and not overheating the power supply, I wouldn't
be too concerned about it.

Thomas, If you use the 3.5 and 5 1/4 in accordance with CBM specs, ie plug the
3.5 in first and then the 5 1/4 you should not have any problems. It may cause
problems if you do the reverse hook up. -Ralph
The reason I'm violating CBM specs and plugging the 3.5" into the 5.25" is that
the 5.25" fails to be recognized when plugged in the _right_ way.
Doggone 3.5" drive is very quiet, but if it won't pass the buss, I don't care
if it's silent.

It isn't "the bus" that it doesn't pass… just the 12 Volts… one wire…
solder one in and it will work the way it should.

I certainly recommend caution if you aren't familiar with which end of a
soldering iron to hold, but with care and a good look at the hardware ref
manual, it isn't a difficult job.

The earlier drives did not pass the 12V power on to the outboundconnector, so
anything plugged in after one of them would not work.
