#PowerWindows v2.0

** Warning to all TDI Modula users **
DO NOT PURCHASE INOVATRONICS POWER WINDOWS version 2.0 SOFTWARE FOR USE WITH
TDI MODULA 2.
This product generates bug-riddled code. The bugs (so far) come in two
flavors:
(1) PROCEDUREs written by Inovatronics that PW2 calls in the code it writes are
not called correctly. For example, a CHAR array is passed to
MakeStringInfoStructure (I think that was the name!) but the procedure expects
to see the ADR of the array. In another case, the procedure that makes a
requester is passed a NULL followed by 4 INTEGERs when the procedure definition
expects to see 4 INTEGERs followed by a NULL.
(2) The code generator sometimes hiccups and combines two sequential lines
together, with hilarious (and nonfunctional!) results.
As a general observation, this product also suffers from a lack of
understanding of Modula 2 on the part of its authors (at least I think it does
— I'm no expert at the language myself). For example, the IMPORT clauses seem
to import everything that's exported from every cited module, not the limited
subset of entities actually used. For another example, both the DEFINITION and
IMPLEMENTATION modules import the same entities, even though that's not
necessary (i.e., you only need IMPORT stuff you're referencing in the module at
hand — or at least, I've never been hurt by doing so!).
I find this state of affairs very disappointing because the user interface for
this product is first rate. THAT part of the program works exactly the way
you'd expect it to.

P.S. — In fairness to Inovatronics, I must admit I'm more than normally upset
by these problems for two reasons. First, I REALLY like the front end to their
product. I can see how very useful it COULD be. Second, the place I bought the
stuff from has a very rigid return policy (i.e., not very much of one) that has
expired in this case (MORAL — always test the devil out of this stuff RIGHT
AWAY, or only deal with stores with more than a 1 week exchange policy!!)
Mark,
I think Power Windows 2.0 is the best development tool yet to come out
for Amiga. This is what CBM should have shipped with the machine 2.5 years
ago. It is such a boon, that if it doesn't work correctly with TDI — I'd dump
TDI. Go with BenchMark Mod-2 or C (actually, since I'm not crazy about Mod-2,
I'll stick with C — altho BenchMark is a fantastic implementation of Mod-2).
Sigh…you're right. I really should've invested more time in learning C.
Somehow, though, I find Modula 2 more intuitive (also, since I type pretty fast
— faster than I can think out programs, anyway! — its verbosity never
bothered me).
In case anyone else is listening in, let me reaffirm the postscript in my
flame. The main reason I was so annoyed was that I could see how very useful
the product (PowerWindows v2) COULD be…and I thought even minimal debugging
would've uncovered the problems I ran into.
From what I've heard elsewhere, if you program in C or assembler you probably
won't have any problems with the product.
Though I wouldn't know, since I try to avoid doing either!

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with the PW2TDI code generator.
Part of the problem sounds like it is in the PW2.def and PW2.mod files. This
has already been fixed and is available to customers for free. In fact, our
bug-fix and update policy is simply: send us your disk and we send it back with
the latest software. For the moment though, use the PW2.sym and PW2.lnk files
that were in the TDI directory on the release disk, rather than recompiling the
PW2 files. (An old and incorrect PW2.def file was on some of the disks!) As
far as the IMPORT list in the header file goes, feel free to customize this
file as much as you like to remove any unneeded IMPORTs. That is why it was
included as a separate file.
The TDI source generator, which is a separate program from PW2 and does NOT
have any affect on the C and assembler code generation, was extensively tested
here by me and by a Modula-2 expert. However, it sounds like you have hit some
real bugs, so please let us have a detailed description of them and we will fix
them!
By the way, a better example.mod file is also now available. We are working
on the set-up of a 24hr. BBS to support all our users. When it comes up, we
will have a method of quickly and efficiently distributing bug fixes and other
types of support, as well as providing a forum for PW2 users to share ideas.
Please contact us here, by phone or by mail until that time. We'll do
whatever is necessary to support PW2.
Thanks,
Martin Murray
