Anyone who can help: I am having a problem with the simplest of AmigaDOS cmds, the DIR cmd In the A500 manual it states "You can even look at the directory of a disk which isn't currently in the drive. For Example, the comments of the freshly formatted disk we relabled can be displayed by the following command: DIR MyDisk: AmigaDOS asks you to insert that disk into the drive to allow DIR to read it…." Yet everytime I try that I get "Insert Workbench 1.2 disk" then "Bad Arguements" The only change I make (obviously) is to replace MyDisk: with the filename of my disk. As as example I use DIR cis disk #1: Thanks in advance, Ena

Ena, if you use spaces in the file name, you must enclose the file name in quotes. Example: Dir "cis disk #1" Do not change the disks until you are prompted to do so because AmigaDOS must first load the Dir program from the c directory of the workbench disk before it can perform that function on the disk you request. Ted; THANKS MUCH, as I said it was something simple, going back to that "trying to run while learning to walk" theory I guess one of these days I should sit down & start right but for now I thankful as heck for CIS & people like you & ben et al. who at least keep me sane! Ena

Ena, you might want to try something even simpler, just type: dir ? then when you see the prompt "DIR,OPT/K:", put in the disk you want in the internal drive (assuming you have only one drive) and type: df0: <return> Couldn't get much simpler, especially when you can't remember the volume name or it is too long to type! 73, Kelly

Ena: dir "cis disk #1" <enter> will solve you rproblem. The CLI commands won't (generally) take a file name with spaces in it unless they are surrounded by quotes. May I make a suggestion? Just for convenience sake, use an underline: cis_disk_#1 in file names… it's just as clear, and it removes the need for quotes. Myself, to save typing (and because it has _style_, as Gallegher says, I use: CisDisk#1 or CISdiskOne. Happy CLI'ing! –Ben–
