#Daytime rates?
8 messages in this thread
Hi…I'm rather new to compuserve, but I have had my amiga since dec, 1985. I
do enjoy it. I have a couple of questions though, and I hope someone could help
me out.
1: What are 'DayTime Rates' and why are they 'Goodbuy forever?"
2: I just received my (Purchaced) copy of FACCII and was wondering
If anyone has any idea what the optimal number of buffers to have
on a 512k (too poor to upgrade presently) dual drive Amiga would be.
Thanks…

Brad,
Up until 6 months ago, CIS charged different rates for access during
the hours of 8am – 6pm….these "daytime" rates were significantly higher than
non-daytime rates. About 6 months ago, they changed the policy and _lowered_
the rates during the day to what they were during the night so you can now
connect at the lower rates 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.
20-30 buffers is normaly adequate for almost anything.
Don
Don,
Thanks for the info. I have found that using 128 buffers gives me
the latitude I need. Occasionally I have to cut this in half when memory
gets tight, but for most CLI applications I think 128 is just dandy!

Brad, "Daytime Rates" are the higher per-hour charges that you pay during prime
time… which I believe is 8 AM to 6 PM in your local time zone.
"Goodbye Forever" is because, after some testing this summer, CompuServe once
and for all DID AWAY with daytime rates; you now pay the same charges 24 hours
per day. We were all so excited about it at the time that we posted a notice
in the bulletin — well, *I* did, actually — and I think it's just the warm
fuzzy feeling we get from seeing the message that keeps it in the bulletin.
Interestingly enough, because of this change, CompuServe is now one of the most
cost-effective networks for businesses needing electronic mail, stock market
information, airplane reservations, and the rest which make up our particular
brand of service.
Can't help you with the Facc question, as I run 1.5 Megs here. If it's of any
use to you, I run 512 buffers most of the time.
Rick
Rick;
Could you please explain the difference between PRI and STD when
reviewing your charges? Are they merely used to tell the access time s? Thanks.
Ena
The PRI is a holdover from when PRIme time rates were in effect. There are
still some 3rd party information suppliers that do charge a prime time
surcharge (prime time being 8AM-6PM local time). These are few and far between
and you are told about the surcharge before entering those areas.
Steve;
Thanks. Ena
Richard,
Thanks for the info (background) on Daytime Rates.
I wish I had 1.5 or so MEG of memory, but maybe soon. If I get brave
I might do the hardware mod from an earlier Amazing Computing.
