#Aspect ratio problems
5 messages in this thread
I am having trouble recording TARGA images from 3DS on a PCR film recorder. The
images do not
print in the proper aspect ratio (shapes are oval instead of round). What
should I set the
horizontal and vertical resolution to in 3DS when printing 2K resolution on
the PCR? I am using
Zenographics Windows print utility and printing through Photoshop. Thanks.
Kenneth, your pixel aspect ratio on the PCR has to match the pixel aspect ratio
you render the images with. I'd guess your TARGA images may have been rendered
with a pixel aspect ratio for a NTSC video card, which often isn't 1.0, and the
PCR wants an AR of 1.0, causing the problem. First, make sure of the PCR's
pixel aspect ratio requirements and re-render with the proper one in 3DS.
Hope this helps,

>>TGA -> film recorder…
I don't know about a PCR film recorder, but the film recorder I ususally send
TGAs to uses a PIXEL aspect ratio of 1.0. I render 640×480 at 1.0 for low
resolution, but often use higher resolution such as 1024×768 or 2666×2000,
keeping the pixel aspect ratio at 1.0 and the image aspect ratio (horizontal
resolution divided by vertical resolution) at about 4/3=1.3333. This seems to
work ok. (The film recorder guy said the device could handle a vertical
resolution of up to 8000 pixels – wouldn't that make a big file!)

Kenneth,
Yep, everybody seems to have the answer. We're a Truevision Master
Dealer and have sold the Agfa film recorders. Shooting through Photoshop you
should definitely use a 1.0 aspect ratio on your rendered images. Rendering
can be at various resolutions; we usually used 2048×1536. If you were using
Image Assist or QPR, you could easily work with the aspect ratio used for Targa
video (generally 1.266 for 512×486).

Kenneth, I've had trouble with aspect ratio myself when shooting slides. I
still haven't got it completely figured out. But Render to 2250×1500 with an
aspect ratio of 1.0 in studio. This should give you nice circles, full screen
slides, etc. Let me know how it goes.
