I am interested in buying a high quality printer that will do graphics, color, and excellent NLQ printing. I am considering th Alps ALPQ218 18 wire printer. It is available for about $398 and I am told it will do all that I described above..BUT!!!…. I don't know ANYTHING about Alps products. Is this a quality product? Have any of YOU seen or used this printer? Is ther a print driver available for it. If any of you know anything about this printer PLEASE leave me a message!! Thanks, Dick STaples.

The Alps is a great printer — very reliable, but, get the 24 pin head instead, there is a definite difference in quality.

Thanks for the information Steve, I really appreciate it! How about print ribbons? Are they easy to find as in generic or similar to another printers ribbons or ay brand specific?

Dick – I have an Alps ALQ324 printer – 24 pin, but wide carriage model. Have been VERY happy with it, very fast in draft and considerably faster in LQ mode than other 24 pin printers I have seen. The epson LQ2500 driver in DL 11 drives with without problems, with one hint: set the mode to LETTER quality for printing graphics for the really good quality printout. the DRAFT mode is much faster but washed out (9-pin emulation but not as good as most 9 pin). Have only had mine for a few weeks but I know some people who have worked with them in the military, and they say they're workhorses, very reliable. Hope this helps! @ Anne

Thanks for the prompt reply Anne! How about print ribbons? Are the ribbons the same as for other popular printers, or specific to the Alps?/ex

Dick – The printer ribbons I have are marked ALPS, and are somewhat different from other ribbons I have seen. They come both in four-color and plain black. I get them from my dealer since I live a long ways from real computer stores, don't know how generally available they are. Steve may have more info than I on whether the ribbons are the same as any other printer's, and on availability.
