I am getting REALLY frustrated with my Amiga. Besides the overall (and
seemingly never-ending) lack of support which CBM has given this machine, I am
now having problems using Workbench which seem to be the result of very
inconsistent programming. Why is it that when I put in the 1.2 WB disk,. the
icons come up lightening-quick, but when I COPY that disk and then tailor it to
fit my needs, the icons literally CRAWL up on the screen, seriously, it takes
almost a MINUTE sometimes for 6 or 7 icons to come up!! Also, I am having quite
a few problems with the machine simply locking up, resulting in a software
failure guru. Getting back to the icon situation, sometimes they DO come up
fast—but NEVER as fast as they do on the original WB disk. Can you offer any
solutions?? Also, anticipating a question you may ask, there are a LOT fewer
files in MY system directory than there are on the WB disk—i.e., less files
for Amiga to look thru for .info files. Thanks in advance for the help….(Do
Mac and Atari users have these problems??)
Nah… They have other problems instead. I believe the business with how slow
the icons come up has to do with how spread out the directory info is on the
disk (which gets worse the longer you create and delete files from it). If I
recall, the best solution is to COPY (note… *COPY*, not duplicate. Use the
copy df0: to df1: all command…) the disk to a newly formatted disk. This
should organize things a bit better.

I tried it out (WB 1.2 in df0:, blank formatted disk in df1:) with a COPY DF0:
DF1: ALL, but the resulting disk is not bootable…when I put it in and do a
reset, I get the full screen request for the WB disk. What did I do wrong?
Whoops! Forgot one little thing… You also have to INSTALL the disk to make
it bootable… (If it was in DF1: you would type INSTALL DF1:)

Jeff, you must INSTALL the copy you made for it to be bootable. To do this,
boot with your original disk, place the COPY'd disk in df1: and type in the CLI
prompt, "Install df1:" (without the quotes). This will make the disk in df1:
bootable.

Was the disk you copied the file to formatted under AmigaDOS 1.1? if
so, that is the problem….to get the faster workbench access, you have to
format the blank disk under AmigaDOS 1.2 and then copy the files from one disk
to another. If the disk was created via DISKCOPY, then the format isn't a
concern, what causes the slowdown there is the deleting of files. Once you get
a disk you are happy with, then format a new disk and COPY the files from the
old "slow" disk to the new disk via the :
COPY df0: to df1: ALL (or whatever you disk set up is)
command
That should speed things up considerably!

No matter how many files have been deleted the speed at which the icons
come up should NOT change….maybe even speed up if there have only been file
deletions.

I agree, it shouldn't matter, but I've found (gut feeling, not a timed
test) that if you delete a bunch and add a bunch and delete and so forth, it
does seem to cause the icons to come up a bit slower. I don't use workbench so
it's only been on a few disks where I was playing where I thought I noted the
slowdown. I also may have been making a poor comparison since it wasn't any
kind of real test.
