What I paid for the printer and what it retails for are 2 different things! It
retails for $795. There is a color option for it (I didn't get it so I don't
know the cost — under $150, tho). If you get the PaintJet, do realize that it
will give you great color pics, but the text output (at 180 dpi) won't be as
good as a good 24 pin dot matrix.
Alps had the ALQ-200 series. You could get it with either an 18 pin head
(ALQ-218) or the 24 pin head (ALQ-224). So, if someone told you specifically
that the ALQ-218 was a 24 pin printer they either didn't know what they were
talking about or they stretched the truth. It _can_ be a 24 pin printer if you
spend an extra $100 to get the 24 pin print head — but then the printer
becomes the ALQ-224. At any rate, the ALQ-224 is discontinued and replaced by
the ALQ-224e.
Well Steve, I went over to a computer store and saw what the color printout of
the Star NX1000 Rainbow and was not impressed. I also saw what the color
printout of a HP Inkjet was and "WOW". I also found out how much they cost and
to run. Each of the ink/paint wells runs up to $30 a peice and for that price
just to color printouts for home use is just to much. I may just get
a 24 pin printer (probably the Star 2400) but I can't justify getting such an
expensive printer.
I may still get the 24 pin color printer or one that has the option of going
color, but I'm going to wait until someth catches my eye.
You told me what your printer retails for (and who nowadays pays the retail
price anyway) but what did you pick it up for and where. I'll either go mail
order or wait for a christmas sale.

I bought the P5200 wholesale from a local distributor. Wholesale in one piece
blocks is $516.

Um, I just picked up the rainbow, and have yet to print anything out in
color on it so your message disturbs me. I was thinking it had to be at least
as good as the old Epson JX-80 was, and if so, at $349 or so retail, it's a
steal. What did you not like about the quality of the print? I've got 1.3
back in stock now, so I have the printer drivers and will be running the
Rainbow through it's paces on Monday. (I made some 1.3WB disks but neglected
to make a copy of the extras disk before I sold out, Aargh:-) thanks for any
info!
