Scott: Thanks for your reply re: smoothing. We were indeed using a
bitmapped font (specifically, the Kana font that comes with MacKanji). We
saw no improvement in jaggies, printing from Microsoft Word 3.02, System
6.0.2, on a LaserWriter Plus.
While I've got your attention: What Postscript fonts do you have for other
languages? We'd be particularly interested in Japanese Kanji (especially
if it includes full JIS level 2 support) and Korean. Arabic, Hebrew, and
in fact all other major languages are also of interest.
What can you tell me about progress in the area of support for Kanji (and
other large character systems) in Postscript?
I PEmyself don't have any fonts in the works for foreign language sets
(though i have thought about the area). Some companies that you might want
to check out are:
Allotype Typographics Fonts include Kadmos (classical Greek); Chemical
structure fonts; Demotiki (modern Greek); and two Polish fonts, among

These are listing from the Macintosh 1988 Product Registry, which is about a
Year old now, so the products listed above may or may not be in existence…I
suspecQ!ose that are have increased their support of Laser fonts, and may
actually have a Kanji worked out in laser form.
I've seen notes here and there from people wh9o have mentioned working on
Kanji PS fonts, but don't have any specific leads.
As for general info regarding character encoding schemes for larger
character sets, you'll have to talk to Adobe themselves, I'm sure (I don't
believe that creating a larger character set is a problem, but implementing it
on the Macintosh could be…there IS however a Kanji System Software release
(from Apple), and I have heard of Kanji word processors as well).
