Steve: I first noticed this problem in Pagemaker 3.01, but have since traced
PostScript errors in Illustrator and Quark to the same problem. It took me a
while to realize tj a while to realize this because I was using a spooler, and
I wasn't getting the e the error messages. I re-download to disk in my RIP 1,
and the problem goes awas away, but it may crop up again without warning in
some other typeface or typefaces. I talked to Adobe tech support and was told
that this error was due to the complexity of my PostScript file, and that I
should adjust the flatness to eliminate it, but it soon became clear that this
was a type m problem. Does this help? It is very frustrating, and it only
happens when I am under deadline (of courser deadline (of course). Any ideas?

I'd suspect that the problem is in the RIP1's interpreter. We've been using the
RIP2 for about a year now, and I'd forgotten some of the occasional problems
we'd had with the RIP1. We had a few occasional PostScript errors which we
could never track down. (It's been too long, so I don't remember the names of
the errors.) We also had a couple of complex Illustrator files which would
cause the RIP1 to go into a loop, and never come out until the RIP1 was shut
down. And when the RIP2 was installed, they virtually all went away.
Of course, Adobe never went so far as to admit that there were BUGS in their
interpreter, or that the interpreter might allow a font installed on your hard
disk to get corrupted to cause such a problem, but the fact is that the newer
intepreter (version 47.2) does seem to fix the problems we had back then.
