I'm shopping for a serious C language development system. It appears to be
between Manx and Lattice. A source level debugger is a must. What do you folks
like?
In the December issue of AMIGAWORLD they listed two C compilers by Microsoft.
Since when does Microsoft sell a 68K C compiler? I thought they were in love
with that *other* CPU.

MicroSoft doesn't sell a C compiler for the Amiga. However, since you
can use thier MS-DOS C compiler with the Amiga AND Bridgeboard combo.. it was
listed. Most stuff you see in Amiga World you can take with a grain of salt.
Right now, Lattice v5.0 seems to be the top dog, and it does include a
source level debugger—but since the debugger is new to this release, and I
haven't received the update yet…I can't tell you how good/bad it is.
Lattice and Manx leapfrog each other at least once a year, so in a few
months, you'll see Manx out with a new/better release. In this particular
area…the competition between Lattice and Manx is very beneficial to the end
user.

The competion is also good for their income – especially when we pay $75 each
time we upgrade! Yes, I know they have to pay for documentation, disks,
packaging, etc. but they have to still be making money, or the price would be
higher.
Now I wonder what Lattice 6.0 will bring with it next November when it comes
out!

I use MANX and the MANX SDB source level debugger, and I like them. I'm
getting close to buying the Lattice compiler though….It really looks like
John Toebes and others at Lattice have done a heck of a job on the new version
(5.0). I saw them showing it off at AmiExpo in LA, and it looked really nice.
MANX's update should be out soon. I'll be waiting to see what's in the new
update. If it's not what I expect, I'll be switching!
