#NEC CD-ROMs?

The NEC CD-ROM is Mac compatible. Their font scheme is clever, and
their price on fonts is very competitive. The same can't be said of the
stock library, which is rather limited. The photos are FPO. You have to
pay a steep fee to rent the hard copy. NEC has some unusual language in
the license agreement re the digitised photos, which left us wondering if
we could even LOOK at the printouts. The NEC folks who demonstrated the
whole set-up didn't have a catalog of the clip-art, so I don't have any
input there.
What I find noteworthy is the fact that NEC has spent a LOT of
money the past three weeks to advertise this family of products in
NON-COMPUTER magazines, like Business Week. Could this be "DTP for the
Rest of Us?"
Well, keep in mind that NEC — eight years ago — was about the only
company that was positioned not only to beat Sony but to enter and maybe
win in the American microcomputer market of the time. Where are they today?
Ask their marketing department! And, it sounds like the same group of bozos
is still working there. That is the one bad thing about the Japanese way of
corporate life as a two-way family-like responsibility: You wind up with
dummies for a lonnnnnnnnnnnng time once they get to a certain level.
I know what you mean. I had a NEC APC, CP/M, 8" floppies and all.
And did you ever notice that FEDEX's ill-fated ZAP-MAIL consisted of a NEC
scanner, a NEC APC and a laser printer? $40,000 of hardware to do in 1985
exactly what $2000 FAX machines started doing in 1986.
These people may be stupid, but they've got some deep pockets.
Maybe they'll get it right some day.
