#Mattel and Amiga

Hi, folks,
There's an article in the latest issue of "MicroTimes", a free computer mag
here in the SF Bay Area, about how a guy named Conti is making a pretty
good living in HWood doing 3D graphics on his Amiga (he started apparently
with a $300, used, Ami 1000, which gen'd $30,000 in revenue for him in his
first year). Anyway, an interesting thing in this, generally kind of
"gushy" (e.g., sweetly, amusingly, positive) article was that the guy
mentioned that Mattel toys was using Amiga(s?) to model toys and that the
Execs at Mattel are really sold on the machine! This is interesting to me
because it implies that the Ami is being used for what Biz Boys call
"strategic" (e.g., not housekeeping) purposes. "Strategic" means it
directly affects their sales. At one point in the article, Conti is quoted
as saying that Matell executives use tapes of Amiga 3D objects to start
planning market strategies. This is heavy stuff, for a pretty big company
that is mostly marketing, is it not?
I wonder how much of this is true? The article, as I say, was king of
gushy, written by Ben and Jean Means, names which ring a bell, but not very
loudly. Anyone?

I read that somewhere as well, but I can't remember if it was in Amazing,
Transactor, Amiga World, or Compute's Amiga Resource (I know it was one of
the four because those are the only ones I read).
Ah, here it is…"Amiga Builds a World" by Ben and Jean Means, in the Feb.
90 issue of Amiga Resource. It also deals mostly with Jim Conti, and
mentions the Amiga being used at Mattel. I've read that elsewhere as well,
but I can't recall where.

Ben and Jean Means have written a number of Amiga articles, and Conti has
been mentioned in a half-dozen different articles. He's a great guy, and
he's certainly used the Amiga in a number of places, but frankly, I'd be
more satisfied if writers could find someone *new* every time they write
another gushing article.
I'm sure they do find someone new every time they write an article… they
just sell the original article several times!!
I had heard that Mattel used Amigas, but I never knew exactly what they
used them for. Thanks for the info.
