I am the Amiga Product Manager for a computer chain starting in Southern
California called Computer City. We are owned by Mitsubishi and Inacomp
computers. We are authorized dealers for IBM, Apple, Commodore, Epson, HP,
NEC, SUN, AGFA, etc… The stores average about 35,000 sq ft with some of
the best flooring in the buisness. The Pilot store in Garden Grove, CA
where I work is 50,000 sq ft with a $40,000 giant play-ground for the kids
purchased by CBM West Coast District sales. We are considered CBM's most
promising account. We sell Amigas on equal ground with the top of the line
Apples and IBMs.
The problem I keep running into are that Amiga vendors/distributors are
simply not close to the same level of professionalism as their IBM/Apple
counterparts. Most of our non-Amiga and flooring demos for all IBM/Apple
software is provided free from the manufactuer. At the very least we
expect good credit terms (which is very hard to get from Amiga
Distributors, dispite the fact that we are owned by Mitsubishi!) and
excellent support.
Companies like Impulse are the perfect example for why the Amiga
stuggles to compete with Apple/IBM! When we first opened I purchased Turbo
Silvers from a Distributor (like all big chains we far prefer to buy from a
Distributor than direct for a number of reasons). When I asked for a floor
Demo the Distributor balked at me and told be to call Impulse. So I called
Impulse and rather than send me a Demo are some flooring of their product,
they tried to steal the account from their own distributor! That looked
real professional to out Cooperate Purchasers. So I gave up and purchased
a copy for my own personal use and to use on our Demo Machines (we had at
the time , 2 A2500/30, 2 A2500/20, 5 A2000, and 12 A500's set up as demos
in different parts of the store: video, entertainment, productivity,
etc…). Guess what it crashes on my A2500/30 (with a A2091) as well as
our demo units (except the A2000's and A500's in the entertainment
section). Well this was before people had figured out the
