#Floppy partition on HD

I downloaded a file called FMSDIS.LZH. It's supposed to emulate a floppy drive on the harddrive. I followed the instructions but am having trouble getting this to work. It says to assign FMS: to an empty directory. What's the point of this. Nothing ever gets written to this directory. After I give the format command everything seems to proceed properly and I'm given an onscreen message that the drive is being initialized but then when I try to read this drive I get an error saying that this is not a DOS disk. There seem to be a number of files in the archive for which no instructions are given. These include Makefile; DMakefile; DMakefile.lat, fms.c, and tag.a. What are these for and are they necessary for this to work? Thanks -JOHN K. – via Whap!

John, I can't answer you specific questions about the program, but as to the extra files DMakefile, DMakefile.lat, fms.c and tag.a. Those are the source code to the program. There're there so that folks that can understand it can see how it's done. Don

I think you have to Format it before you can use it. -GG

I did format it and everything seems to go fine. No error messages during the format process. Yet when I try to access the partition I get the message "Not a DOS disk in drive 5". Who would be the best person to ask about this problem? Is there anyone out there who has gotten this to work? -JOHN K. – via Whap!

You must do the FMS: assign since that's where FMS store's its "Unit0", "Unit1", etc. floppy files. These files hold the actual "floppy" data that is accessed by the device driver. The "Unit" files are created once you mount the device and FORMAT it. My FMS: directory looks like this: Unit0 901120 —arwe- 10-Jun-90 08:43:22 Unit1 901120 —arwe- 10-Jun-90 08:40:31 Unit2 901120 —-rwed Yesterday 23:49:35 I have three FMS "floppies" on my system. Once you get the thing working properly, you'll love it. Comes in quite handy for putting together disks for clubs or friends.

I'm still not totally clear on the process. At what point do these files (Unit0, Unit1, etc) get written. Is there a command I need to run? I've done the assign command but I think there must be something I'm missing along the way. Could you please step me through the exact process start to finish? Thanks. -JOHN K. – via Whap!
