how come no where in the JR Comm 1.0 that I downloaded from C Serve does
it say how much it costs to register your package?? I have looked in the
USER MANUAL and in the program itself.. How much is that com package in
the window??
Also, in your manual you state that 16 color ANSI should not be used with a
hi speed modem.. I can use IBM ANSI (color) at 9600 baud on my turbo XT
clone, and I thought the Amiga was faster (overall) than a 8088-10…
JR COMM looks like one super package, overall!

I managed to leave that info out of the text files in JR-Comm 1.0, it was
on the registration form, but you have to print it out to see it. There is
an info file for registration in the 1.01 version, which is $30.
The Amiga is a bitmapped display system, a 16 color display on the Amiga
requires 64kbytes, on an IBM it only needs 4kbytes. The problem arises
during scrolling operations, that's why I recommend 2 or 4 colors only with
9600bps and faster modems.

Can you tell me how to choose what disk to download to when using
Zmodem? I use a two drive system, no hard drive. I cant find the info I
need in the docs, apparently. At this time, it apparently wants to download
only onto the jr-comm disk. I have been trying jr-co}mm out for a few days
now, and really like it, but I mainly wnated it for the Zmodem support.

When you tell CIS to send a program, they ask you the name for your
computer. Give it both the path and the filename you want. For example:
Name for your computer? DF1:FILENAME.LZH

Pull up the requestor for the General item in the Options Menu
(rightamiga/8). In the lower left of the window is a block of string
requestors labeled Paths. If you put in a device (i.e. DF1:) in the
"Download" requestor (2nd from the top if memory serves) JR-Comm will save
to what ever disk is there. Or if you put in a disk name (i.e. Empty:) it
will save to that disk in whatever drive it occupies. Apparently your
current value is JRComm:.
Trying to overide this value by giving CIS a full path name when it asks
for a file name has always given me an error message. However the value
could be changed while online.

I think it sure does help. Does CIS have ZMODEM now? I didnt realize it if
they do. Anyway ther was a little info in the docs about changing the
path, but no instructions on how to do it! And such a large manual. Well

CIS now supports YModem, but not ZModem. However, B+ is better than
ZModem, and has the same capability to re-start an interrupted download.

Yes I always use B+ on CIS. THe local BBSs dont have it tho, as you know. Z
saves alot of time on local BBSs.

Sorry, ZMODEM is *much* better, and more robust than CIS B+. For one, it
doesn't do nearly as much character escaping, 32 bit CRC, file appending
and a few other file maintanence options.

Any special reasons why that is so? They are both streaming protocols…

I don't know about ZModem…but CIS B protocol "quotes" some
characters (not sure which ones) thus actually sends more data (ignoring
the handshaking) than the file contains.

It's mentioned in the Installation.doc that floppy users should format a
few blank disks with the volume name "DOWNLOAD". Then, from the general
parameters requester, you should enter the pathname "DOWNLOAD:" so that it
will go to the properly labled disk. You should also toggle the "free
space check" on so that you can swap disks when it gets full.
CIS doesn't have ZMODEM, at least not that I'm aware of. But, JR-Comm
does have CIS B+, which works much like ZMODEM, although not completely.

Thanks much for the help. The help that Homer gave me also helped (assign-
ing the path to df1:). I have another question or two. Is there a way to
view a disk directory while using the program? I sometimes need to do this.
Also, is there an easy way using another program of some kind, to prepare
message replies offline? (while using jr comm). Ive tried Whap, and would
prefer to do it manually, actually. The whap delay screen makes the demo
unusable, I dont have the patience. I also dont like the big brother
attitude of the author (the automatic messages). (PLEASE, noone take
offense, I beg you.) Your delay screen,on the other hand is very
reasonable, and the program is very user-friendly. I will be registering as
soon as I get my next paycheck.

Well, the file requester opened for file transfers and other stuff within
JR-Comm will allow you to look at disk directories. But you could run one
of the many directory utilities along with JR-Comm and get much more
functionality.
The same with editing too. Just run what ever editor, MEmacs is one,
while using JR-Comm.

As you can tell I am a fairly new amiga user. Im putting the check in
the mail tomorrow, BTW. The quality of your software and your efforts to
support users, even potential deadbeats like me on the two major networks
is quite commendable.
Can you or anyone else here recommend a good directory utility
and give me the filename of MEmacs (or any good text editor)?

There are several good directory utilities in the libraries. (Should be
Library 9 of AmigaUser, but a few might have strayed to Library 15.) There
is a new one that looked good to me, MegaD – just uploaded a couple of days
ago. I really liked the way it worked when I checked it out. Many people
really like SID, too. And there is a new version of UtiliMaster in Library
1.

Thanks for the directions. I DLed a text editor, and am trying it out now;
Also DLed MegaD. You are right, it does look nice. The author seems to have
done something funny with the text in the doc file, so that it feeds some
single lines through real fast, so that text editor has already come real
handy, just as a text viewer. (explanation: I bought my amiga used with WB
1.2. Ive looked for 1.3 in stores, but they now say it is not available. I
have read Rob Pecks excellent book, which you recommended to me, so I know
about the More command, but I dont have the command with 1.2.) Oh, the text
editor I am using is Texted, and it works real nice so far.

There are several directory utilities around, SID 1.06 seems nice, has
troubles with WB 2.0 though. Heard of a new one recently, but I've not
used it yet.
As for MEmacs, take a look at the Tools directory on your Extras disk.

The new utility called MegaD is quite nice. It has some of the nicest
features of Browser1.6, which I liked, while still using lots of the nicer
features of the more traditional dirutils.

Oh, one other thing I forgot to ask. How do I set the screen to clear at
the end of the screen page when I call compuserve? I dont have this problem
on the "other service", or on most BBSs (screen doesnt clear).
To get the screen to clear at the end of a page, type GO TERMINAL at any !
prompt online. Choose the option to change your terminal/display
parameters, and let CompuServe know you're using VT100. Then just make sure
you're telling JrComm the same thing 🙂 and you're set! Nice pretty page
breaks.

Thanks Beth, for the solution to my page clear problem. I am just wondering
if having my online defaults set to VT100 will mess up any of the other
terminals I use. Since I am a new Amiga user, I havent yet zeroed in on a
single program to use yet (actually I even ocasionally call in with my
C128). It is likely that I will continue for a while to use multiple Com
programs, this is my concern.
