#Instrument sim.
3 messages in this thread
I have an idea for simulating instruments on the Amiga (to use in
teaching in this instance, but the applications could be broader) and am
wondering which is the best way to develop it. I suspect CanDo will be the
best choice, but I haven't used this program so I would appreciate any
advice. I've borrowed the manual and program with a view to purchasing it
if I can get this idea to work, and am beginning to wade into it, but it's
all still a little unclear.
What do I want to do? Well, I'd like a picture of the front panel of an
instrument with "active" knobs, buttons, sliders, etc. When the student
fiddles with these he or she should see the appropriate effect elsewhere on
the screen. Let's take a chart recorder as an example. One should be able
to "turn" the zero knob and see the pen move up and down the chart. I can
think of two ways to do this. One would be to divide the knob into two
logical halves; clicking on the right half would cause the knob (an
animbrush?) to start rotating clockwise as long as the mouse button was
held down — the left half of the "knob button" (hmmm this terminology
could get confusing!) should do the opposite. Another way would be to drag
inside the "knob button," with the direction and extent of knob rotation
depending on the drag direction and amount. In either case, the knob
rotation should be coupled to the movement of a pen brush.
Is any of this possible? Is CanDo the best program for the job? I'd
appreciate any comments or suggestions. If someone has done this sort of
thing already and could show me an example of how it works, that would be
wonderful — I haven't found anything like this in the example decks over
in AmigaVendor, but may have overlooked something.

Knob gadgets are available in powertools, from Innovatronics, who make
CanDo.. but they aren't included in CanDo.. yet They have good phone
support, and are here on CI$, maybe they could add an extar for knobs..
your solution with two halves sounds good also, less system strain than
continuous drag hgadget i imagine.

Well, that's a start. They're C routines aren't they? So I wouldn't be
able to use them directly… > They have good phone support, and are here

I may leave a message to them over in AmigaVendor and see if they have
any plans along that line. Thanks for your help.
