Hello, just before the Amiexpo in Anaheim Ca. I recieved a reply to a call for help about altering Heirachies in Sculp4d.I regret to say that I did not follow up that assistance until now.I have lost both the hardcopy and the disk file so I dont know the name of the person that helped. His help WAS appreciated and my friend that was having the trouble has solved the problem by going back and changing the heirachy completely each time he has a flash of creativity. Now for the 2nd call for help, he has S4D running on a A2000/GVP 3001 33mhz and did 208 frame anim which has produced 15 that are faulty. ie they have 2-3 pixel wide strips ( small blue, large green) argh I cant rember wether down or accross… the screen. When the anim (4.5meg) is run these frames "flash" the screen Note: antialiase not used, approx 12hr gen time Has anyone got any fixit ideas or knows what is causing this fault??? Thanks for any help,I will reply this time. Laurie Carroll From the Land of the Waka Taua ( Maori War Canoe )

Laurie, Methinks it was I who helped on the Heirarchy prob. I have not run against the problem you are currently mentioning. Can you provide a little more info? Such as whether vertical or horiz. strips # of lamps, and other global settings Are the error ridden frames contiguous or scattered throughout the 208 frames? If necessary, you might consider uploading as E-mail (binary) samples of the anim frames. I will try what I can. Michael

Hi Michael, I will be seeing my friend at work today so it will take a day or two to upload any files.I should be able to give you those extra details in about 12hrs ( after work ).Is a Binary file just a compressed IFF file? By the way what kind of work are you doing with S4D? Thanks for taking the time to reply.RGDS Laurie

Laurie, I'm trying to cut back on CIS connect time, so I am suggesting to you to upload any relevant files to me thru Compuserve mail. Go Easy or Go Mail. You can send direct to my personaBO!%~ files area (line noise there) and not worry about me missing you message or the data. The Mail allows you to send either ASCII (text) or binary (data)[8D. If you are uncertain about the procedures to do so, let me know. What work am I doing with S4D? Very little right now. Work and parenting and household chores capture the bulk of my attention, and Black Belt Systems' HAM-E unit is being played with a lot. I intend to re-create the chemical plant where I work in a Sculpt scene for training purposes. Hopefully, to be integrated in an AmigaVision module with interactive process decisions. > the Heirarchy prob. What was that heirarchy problem? I think I may be running into one in a complex animation I'm doing now. Occasionally, Sculpt will seem to forget about an object (or three) that is attached to a path, and said object just will not move. Re-naming the objects (even with the same name) seems to re-attach them, but it makes me nervous before a long render not to know whether all my objects will move. Was there a reliable solution? Since I'm on the subject of Sculpt, I've occasionally had problems with the CSG spheres, which seem to swell while tumbling along a path. The problem seems to be that the underlying structure (the 12-vertex pseudo-sphere) seems to distort, and the CSG sphere just takes on the largest diameter of the resulting distorted shape. I haven't found a solution — the only thing I can do is to redirect the paths to make it happen more to the back of the scene where it is less obvious. …wjas {;-O>

Hi Willie,my friend at work appears to have figured out a solution to the heirachy prob. ( I am not using S4D yet) he clears it all and then goes back and renames the whole lot. This appears to work OK.I will have to get h him to write it down so I can put it on the board. Your prob.with the spheres looks like Daves prob. except the sizing of them, I believe he solved that.I hope to see him tommorrow (06Dec) so should get a reply back in a couple of days. PS on CNN a week ago they interv'd the Disney people that are using S4D on their new kids Cartoon set with 30's style planes. They showed wire frame anims made on AMIGAS !!!!!! with S4D See you soon,Laurie [:-)

> …figured out a solution to the heirachy prob…he clears it all… I was afraid that would be it. That's what worked for me, too, only I think all I really had to do was rename the top level of whatever one was frozen. An annoying little problem… > Your prob.with the spheres … I believe he solved that. That would be good; I was really pleased when the CSG spheres came along because a lot of what I use Sculpt for is animating molecules, etc, for use in teaching biochemistry, and those spheres, appropriately sized and coloured, make great atoms! Thanks for your reply. Good Disney news -it's always nice to see Amiga stuff "out there." …wjas {;-O>

Willie, what are the CGS spheres? Something I've missed in S4D? Michael

> …what are the CGS spheres? Something I've missed in S4D? That's CSG, which stands for Constructive Solid Geometry. These are "true" spheres, described by a centre and a radius rather than by vertices and triangular faces. They were used in the Juggler demo, but were not present in early versions of Sculpt. They *are*, however there in more recent versions (I think the one I have is v2.09; the program and manual are at work, so all of what I say here is from memory, but it should be fairly close). You get them by adding a sphere as usual, but typing "-1" into the requestor when asked for the number of subdivisions. They are represented in the tri-view as a 1-subdivision (ie 12-vertex) sphere, and will also appear that way if rendered in the non-ray-tracing modes (wire, sketch, painting). In snapshot and photo mode, though, what you get is a smooth sphere, with no facets. They have their limitations, but if you just need spheres, they are great! …wjas {;-O>

Willie, My version is 2.04c. I just tried -1 for # of subdivisions and got a 12 vertice sphere. Haven't rendered yet, will try that out. Thanks for the explanation! Michael
