#486 Benchmark rendertest
8 messages in this thread
Why would this happen?
I did a benchmark on 3 systems.
486-25Mhz Intel 486DX2-66Mhz Intel 486DX2-80Mhz AMD
I ran the following renders with these results. All were from frame zero
single renders to the screen except Plasma which was frame 25.
80Mhz 66Mhz 25Mhz
57Chevy 1:40 1:53 3:41 Birdshow 1:38
1:51 3:43 Chopper :39 :42
1:25 OldCity3 :30 :34 1:06
Here is where it gets different. I purchased the Plasma IPAS and ran
Plasma2 :18 :14 :27 Spheres :57
:45 2:08
And then this is back to what I would expect.
Water5 3:38 3:47 7:50
Spheres is just a bunch of spheres I made up of different sizes, colors,
textures, and bump maps.
I believe that Water5 is also from the IPAS I bought.
Can anyone explain why the 66Mhz would be faster on two tests than the 80 Mhz?
I am trying to decide which to purchase. I cannot afford a Pentium at this
time.
Thanks,
Dennis
I would'nt trust AMD's chip and just go with the Intel 66Mhz. if I was you.

Do you have some reasons?
The AMD was about 13% faster in most tests.
I was thinking of also trying the Cyrix 80Mhz chip. It is supposed to be 35%
faster for the same price.
Dennis
Dennis: CPU design is complicated. AMD and Cyrix are reversed engineered CPU's
for the most part and may get a better benchmark on some cases but there are
always situations that the can not handle properly and get bogged down like
your own test that had a conflicting timming result. Again, this is a very
complicated issue and a thorough discussion would take pages. Let me know what
you will find since i'm considering a new machine as well.

See the reply to myself on what I found. I couldn't figure out how to get that
into this post.

Sorry for the scramble. Hope this is better.

Reza and all;
For what it is worth, I decided to get a pentium (even if I can't
afford it). This is my own benchmark of CPU's. (If anyone is
interested).
Below are results of systems I have tried.
For reasons I cannot explain, the AMD 80Mhz chip on two occasions was slower
than the Intel 66Mhz chip.
Why would this happen?
I did a benchmark on 4 systems. The 486-25 is the one I have had for
3 years. It has worked well.
486-25Mhz Intel, 486DX2-66Mhz Intel, 486DX2-80Mhz AMD
I ran the following renders with these results. All were from frame zero
single renders to the screen except Plasma which was frame 25.
Pentium 100Mhz 80Mhz 66Mhz 25Mhz
57Chevy :40 1:40 1:53 3:41
Birdshow :37 1:38 1:51 3:43
Chopper :14 :39 :42 1:25
OldCity3 :11 :30 :34 1:06
Here is where it gets different. I purchased the Plasma IPAS and ran
Plasma2 :05 :18 :14 :27
Spheres :20 :57 :45 2:08
And then this is back to what I would expect.
Water5 1:17 3:38 3:47 7:50
Spheres is just a bunch of spheres I made up of different sizes, colors,
textures, and bump maps.
I believe that Water5 is also from the IPAS I bought.

Hi !
Just for your curiosity, I got a (slow) ISA motherboard; here is my results :
Chevy57 640×480=6:26 ?!? 320×200=2:29
Birdshow 640×480=2:16
Chopper 640×480=0:57
OldCity3 640×480=1:37 ?!? 320×200=0:29
I plan to make the extra effort to go to the Pentium. So I wont have to compare
for a year or two…
